Auckland, New Zealand’s largest city has all the amenities of a major city, as well as superb weather and an outdoors lifestyle, from beaches to ski fields, cafes and cultural events, all nestled on one of the world’s best harbours.

Based in South Auckland, Middlemore Hospital is the main hub for acute care and referral services within Counties Manukau Health. It is an accredited, 800 bed teaching hospital and caters for most medical and surgical specialties with a catchment area of about 500,000 people.

Our General Medicine department has undergone significant change in recent months including moving towards Home Based Wards (HBW), reshaping our 42 bed Medical Assessment Unit & development of the Hospital in the Home (HITH).  A further phase of underpinning refinement to enhance the effectiveness of the HBW model is underway in preparation for implementation towards the end of the year. Part of this refinement includes developing an Acute Medicine model of service delivery to complement the ward-based teams and provide senior decision-making early in the patient journey.

Significant opportunity exists for suitably experienced dual trained specialists to practise within a widely diverse population across a broad range of metabolic disease. Applications are also welcomed from Physicians with qualification or professional interest in Acute Medicine and an expressed interest in taking on a clinical leadership role in this field.

Salary and conditions of service will be in accordance with the New Zealand ASMS Award Agreement. Applicants must have suitable training and experience and be eligible for vocational registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand. Eligibility can be obtained by visiting
