Consultant in Acute Medicine
The post will initially be based primarily on one site either Sandwell or city Hospitals the job holder will however be expected to work on a cross site rota.

These posts have been newly established and have been created as part of the expansion and development of Emergency Services at Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust (SWBH). Acute and Emergency Medicine are working together to develop a modern, safe, high quality service for patients presenting with acute medical conditions. You will join a team of 8 Acute Medicine Consultants and 2 Consultants in Geriatrics who have an interest in Acute Assessment of the Frail Elderly patient.
Acute Medicine at SWBH NHS Trust is a fundamental specialty, which has grown dramatically over a matter of years. Acute Medicine has been credited by the Trust and is critical to the day-to-day flow of the hospital. The Acute Physicians are heavily involved in strategic decision-making and play a large role in leadership, management and education with the Trust.
We are looking for individuals who are like -minded, passionate, credible and ready to join the team for the journey to the opening of our new acute hospital the “Midland Met ”.
The successful applicants will have wide training and experience in Acute Medicine or General Internal Medicine with specialty interest. We are looking to develop research within the Unit as well as expand our ambulatory service within the coming years. We are committed to developing and supporting our Consultants with emphasis on leadership and management.

The successful candidate will be mentored with an identified Consultant mentor and appraised yearly.
What we do
As Acute Physicians we are responsible for the first 72 hours of care of our sick medical patients. We look after a range of patients from the very sick, to those that need diagnostics and discharge to ambulatory care and admission avoidance. We house Level 1 beds and have large ambulatory areas as well as short stay units. We deliver prompt senior decision making on the AMU’s with continual presence of acute physicians on the AMU’s.
The AMU Foot print Within the Trust
City Hospital is based 5 minutes’ drive from the City Centre and serves one of the most deprived but vibrant communities in the west of Birmingham. City hospital is renowned for cutting edge research in cardiovascular medicine, the validated and often used CHADVASC score was devised at the city hospital. It is also a world renowned centre for research into Behcets disease. The opportunities for cutting edge research using cutting edge technology has been enhanced by opening a purpose research centre on the Sandwell site in 2019.
The 28 bedded AMU is situated immediately behind the Emergency Department which has recently undergone refurbishment providing updated resources for our Acute medical patients. The unit includes 8 Level 1 beds, and a large ambulatory area.
The short stay unit and west Midlands poisons centre is situated immediately above AMU1 and has 19 beds. 14 beds are managed by the Acute Physicians and 4 by the Regional Poisons service. With have 4 dedicated monitored beds and provide a daily specialist review.
Sandwell Hospital is based within the Black Country, the population is less diverse and older,. Sandwell hospital housed all specialist services for surgery as well as stroke. In the near future it will be the centre of education and research for the trust. period.
This is a purpose built 42 bedded Assessment unit situated immediately above the Emergency Department. The unit included 6 Level 1 monitored beds as well as purpose built Ambulatory Assessment Unit including 5 trolleys and consultation rooms.
Older person assessment unit(OPAU)
The 20 bedded OPAU currently function as a short stay assessment area for the older adult, with a view to making it into a fully functional frailty unit in the very near future.
Other Services we offer-
Our Ambulatory unit cross site have been very successful pioneering chest pain assessment within the area, which was presented and well received at several ambulatory care conferences. The ambulatory area see around 70-80 patients daily, with a discharge rate of over 90%. It is well staffed with ANPs, bands 5 and 6 nurses, with medical cover provided by registrars and consultants.
We have abolished all formal clinics and have created virtual clinics, which aim to provide a robust safety net for patient discharge. We have been highly recommended by SAM for this innovative clinic. Our unit’s discharge between 40-60%% patients home daily and the virtual clinics are key in providing follow up for outstanding results.
Point Of Care USS
With dedicated USS machines as well as accredited clinicians we provide a USS service at the front door, including echo, thoracic and abdominal scans. This has shown to decrease LOS, improve patient journey and experience and increase timely diagnostics.
All procedures such as drains, taps etc are carried out on the AMU.
AMU Clinical Skills Lab
We have recently opened a dedicated AMU Clinical Skills lab which sits within AMU. It houses a simulator, LP, CVP, Chest drain and USS training equipment. This is the first in the UK and plans for research within education in acute medicine is being undertaken.
