Applications are invited for a Consultant post in Respiratory Medicine at Barking, Havering & Redbridge Hospitals NHS Trust. We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and committed colleague to join our rapidly evolving department. The successful applicants to this post will work alongside 7 existing consultant colleagues to provide core respiratory services and to further develop our Tuberculosis services.

BHRUT is one of the largest acute trusts in the country and the biggest provider of acute healthcare services in North East London. Our dedicated workforce of 6,500 staff and volunteers serve our local population of around 750,000, from a wide range of social and ethnic groups. We operate two Emergency Departments (ED). We are extremely proud to be working with the Virginia Mason Institute Programme to transform the care we provide for patients. We are one of only five Trusts in the country selected to take part and our patients greatly benefit from the systems that have led to Virginia Mason receiving awards for excellent and safe care.

The respiratory department is an active and forward looking team composed of eight consultants and six Respiratory specialist registrars. The team is supplemented by dynamic specialist nurses who help to deliver care for patients with TB, lung cancer, COPD, asthma, NIV and Sleep disordered breathing. The department has a respiratory function lab located on both hospital sites. EBUS and Sleep Apnoea service are located at King George Hospital. Respiratory out-patients clinics and bronchoscopy lists take place on both the Queens and King George Sites. The team also supports the local community respiratory services linking with community based respiratory nurses, matrons and physiotherapists. The team provides a consultant delivered specialist respiratory on-call service on a 1 in 8 rota.

This post provides the opportunity for the successful applicant to work within a busy TB service in London (200 new diagnoses per year). Redbridge and Barking and Dagenham both have TB incidence rates that are higher than both the London and national averages. The TB service operates from both King George Hospital and Queens Hospital. There is an extensive TB team including specialist nurses, a TB outreach worker and TB administrators in order to ensure the smooth running of the service and provision of excellent patient care. The TB team work in close liaison with the BHRUT Microbiology and Histopathology departments, the North East London TB Network, Public Health England and our community partners so that we can ensure our patients are treated rapidly and that there is standardisation of care across the network. There is a monthly TB MDT to discuss all new diagnoses, empirical diagnoses and complex cases. The BHRUT TB team also participates in robust North East London sector cohort review and sector wide morbidity and mortality meetings to ensure learning from every TB patient.

Applicants must have full GMC Registration and be on the specialist register or be within 6 months of their CCST date at interview.

Applications from job seekers who require Tier 2 sponsorship to work in the UK are welcome and will be considered alongside all other applications. However, non-EEA candidates may not be appointed to a post if a suitably qualified, experienced and skilled EU/EEA candidate is available to take up the post as the employing body is unlikely, in these circumstances, to satisfy the Resident Labour Market Test. The UK Visas and Immigration department requires employers to complete this test to show that no suitably qualified EEA or EU worker can fill the post. For further information please visit the UK Visas and Immigration website.
