Consultant in General Surgery (OG Surgery)
Applications are invited for appointment of a Consultant in General Surgery with a specialist interest in Oesophago-gastric Surgery at the Royal Surrey County Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.
The OG team have established the Royal Surrey County Hospital/St Luke’s Cancer Centre as a centre of excellence for the treatment of OG cancer as well as providing a tertiary service for emergency regional transfers. The Centre serves four Cancer Units, Frimley Park Hospital, Surrey and Sussex NHS Trust, Ashford & St. Peter’s NHS FT and Hampshire Hospitals NHS FT, with a catchment population of approximately 1.3 million within the Surrey and Sussex Cancer Alliance.
The appointee will enhance the unit team and contribute to delivery of excellent clinical outcomes. The Unit has contributed significantly to national trials for OG patients and contribute fully to the National Audit on OG Cancer. The Unit is currently leading the UK input to a major international randomised trial of pre-operative treatment for oesophageal cancer (neoAegis); the national PI on this trial is one of the RSCH OG surgeons.
The team has focused on the development of radical techniques to ensure R0 resections and enhanced recovery protocols to facilitate the delivery of high quality patient care. The RSCH has dedicated theatre teams working together with an established pool of OG anaesthetists and intensive care specialists to optimise peri-operative care. There is currently a Macmillan-funded pre-habilitation research project in progress.
The postholder will be expected to contribute to the emergency general surgery on-call rota (currently 1 in 12) as well as provide out-of-hours specialist OG support.
