  • Are you a flexible, dynamic and committed forensic psychiatrist who wants to work in one of the UK’s most progressive and exciting mental health and learning disability trusts?
  • Can you lead a clinical team, inspiring them to deliver exceptional quality care that changes people’s lives?
  • Have you ever wanted to live and work in one of the UK’s most beautiful areas?

Our Secure Services are rated as ‘Outstanding’ by the CQC – a position we’re determined to maintain. To help us continue to improve we’re restructuring and refocusing our medical team and have three exciting new posts on offer. For this post we are searching for an exceptional Consultant Psychiatrist to provide mental health care at Avon House, our low-secure unit located within our incredible Langdon Hospital site.

Our 111 acre site offers free parking, a patient-led café, nationally recognised Recovery College and spectacular views across the Dawlish coast and countryside. Just walking in our grounds at lunchtimes or in breaks can help you recharge and set you up for the rest of your shift.

You’ll be joining an established team of 13 Consultant Psychiatrists across the Directorate for on call, cross cover arrangements and continuing professional development.

You will provide outstanding leadership to a clinical team, designing and coordinating the care of patients from a committed multi-disciplinary team (MDT). The work is challenging, but is also highly rewarding.

Choose a career with us and you will have significant opportunities for development – including rotations through the service every 2-3 years. Alongside a generous relocation allowance, an attractive benefits package and a rewarding working environment, we are prepared to discuss flexible local working arrangements, including the potential to work a full-time week over four days for the right candidate.

About you

You will be passionate about making a difference to people’s lives, a commitment you will have exemplified throughout your career. While you will have experience in a forensic setting, we welcome applications from those with a broad range of psychiatric practice.

Whether you are newly qualified, experienced or recently retired and looking for a great quality of life, there is a place for you here in our Directorate, in a rewarding job within a great team.

Holding Approved Clinician status and all relevant professional qualifications, we expect you to demonstrate a strong history of continuing professional development and an enthusiasm for teaching.

Dealing with a challenging caseload and with patients with complex needs, you will use your skills and experience to develop packages of treatment that focus on recovery, where possible helping the people we care for to regain some independence.

We are a service that will hear our patients’ distress. We will listen and make sense about what has happened to them. We will help them find their voice and rebuild their lives. We will help them find a home in the community with relationships and a job. Your role in this journey is so important, not only for our patients but also for their families and carers. You will help some of the most excluded in society return to their communities and play a major role in transforming our patients’ lives.

Our approach to ‘person-centred’ care inspires us. You will work closely with the people you care for, involving them where possible in the decisions that affect them. We call it ‘inspiring hope – together’.

We expect you to be able to demonstrate specific examples of how you have delivered outstanding care, improved patient experience and how you have influenced and inspired teams. We welcome your ideas on how we can improve the services we provide.

All our consultants have 2.5 Programmed Activities for Supporting Professional Activities and we encourage you to participate in leading the trust through service development and Quality Improvement.

You will be an exceptional communicator who will enjoy interacting and working effectively with people who use our services, their families and cares, staff and stakeholders from all backgrounds.

We expect our senior members of staff to lead by example. Working independently, you will make decisions that change people’s lives.
