East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust is one of the largest NHS organisations in the region, employing over 10,000 staff and serving a population of almost 800,000 residents. By merging Colchester and Ipswich hospitals in July 2018, we can provide the latest treatments locally, and be in a stronger position to save, grow and strengthen the many hospital and community services our residents rely on.

We are an ambitious trust with a simple vision, to provide the communities we serve with excellent healthcare and build a better future for the people of east Suffolk and North Essex. To help us do this, we will work closely with our local partners to deliver more of the joined-up services and care our residents need.

We want the best staff. You want to make a difference.

For our staff and our patients we have the same philosophy: time matters. This new way of working will remove unnecessary stress and frustration caused by the systems we use and the way we work. We will concentrate on removing or improving the things we do that don't work for our patients. For our staff, this means more time to care for patients and greater opportunities to develop skills and experience.

To be the best, we need to attract and keep the best staff. Our size puts us in a strong position to grow, providing more of the latest services. Our scale provides exciting opportunities for development, innovation, research, education and training. Support from technology and logistics will help us see patients at the right time.

So, if your ambition matches ours, it’s time to work together.

We are seeking an enthusiastic, ambitious Consultant Breast Imaging Radiologist to join our friendly, motivated team. The service is developing, and this is an exciting opportunity to be part of a forward-thinking team and shape the future of the service. You will predominantly be based at Colchester Hospital, but future cross-site working at Ipswich Hospital may be required.

Applicants for both pure breast radiology or breast and general radiology (or another subspecialty) are encouraged to apply. Whilst ideally, the applicant will be trained in screening, individuals with symptomatic breast training only will be considered. If you wish to train in screening this would be supported by the Trust. Those wishing for less than full-time working will be considered.

General Radiology duties will be based in the main department on the Colchester General Hospital while sessions in breast imaging are located in the Gainsborough Wing on the same site.

You will become one of a team of four committed and enthusiastic breast radiologists based in Colchester forming an essential part of the Chelmsford and Colchester Breast Screening Service. You will be assisted by two advanced radiographic practitioners performing stereotactic biopsy and wire placement and four film reading radiographers providing screen reading. 42,225 women were invited for screening in 2017/18 with an uptake of 78.9%. Our very successful High-Risk MR breast screening service was implemented in 2014.

Symptomatic breast imaging services are provided by the breast imaging team independently in Colchester. The symptomatic service receives approximately 4500 referrals per year. All these referrals are seen in a one stop clinic with surgical and imaging assessment in the same visit. The clinics are well supported by specialist breast care nurses.

The dedicated breast unit is in spacious modern facilities in the Gainsborough Wing. We are fully digital having 1 brand new GE Pristina mammography unit with DBT, CESM and 2D biopsy. There is a further Philips L30 with Diagnostic Scan mammography unit. There are two breast ultrasound rooms with voice recognition reporting equipped with new Canon Aplio machines. Vacuum assisted Encore biopsy is available in addition to standard 14G. MRI services are housed in a new diagnostic imaging centre adjacent to Gainsborough Wing. New breast coils and software are installed. Multi-disciplinary breast care meetings are held in the unit’s dedicated MDT room. The unit enjoys excellent working relationships with our colleagues in breast surgery, oncology and nursing care.

If you are committed to making a difference, we look forward to hearing from you.
