Applications are invited for the post of Consultant in Medical Microbiology for Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust. This is a replacement post and the appointee will join an existing team of 3 other Consultant Microbiologists to support the microbiology laboratory and the Infection Prevention and Control services in the Trust.

Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust was formed in April 2000. It provides general hospital services to a population of approximately 460,000 in West Kent and North East Sussex, and some specialist services to a considerably larger population. It consists of two hospitals, Tunbridge Wells Hospital (opened in 2011) and Maidstone Hospital.

This post is based at Maidstone Hospital but the post holder will rotate between Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells Hospitals according to clinical commitments and will participate in 1 in 4 on-call rota. The Trust provides a wide range of specialist clinical services including the Kent Oncology Centre, clinical haematology, orthopaedics and major trauma, paediatrics and neonatal intensive care as well as general medicine and intensive care units on both sites.

The successful candidate will become part of a team of four consultant microbiologists providing a clinical, diagnostic and infection control service to the acute Trust and general practitioners. A special interest to complement those of the existing consultants is desirable.

The laboratory is centralised at Maidstone Hospital with full UKAS ISO 15189-2012 accreditation and provides comprehensive diagnostic microbiology services to the Trust and local general practices.

Maidstone is in a pleasant part of West Kent with easy access to London, the motorway network and the channel ports. The area offers a wide range of housing, education and recreational facilities. The Kent and Medway Medical School is due to open in 2020 and will provide clinical training in all Kent hospitals, including this Trust.

Applicants must have FRCPath, or equivalent qualifications, and must be on the GMC Specialist Register or within 6 months of attaining Specialist Registration at the time of interview.
