Visiting ENT Consultant
St Helena Island, South Atlantic
Two weeks; expressions of interest and cost proposals for fees invited.
A sub-tropical island of spectacular and beautiful landscapes in the South Atlantic with a warm and friendly population of 4,500, St Helena is a self-governing overseas territory of the UK. Following the opening of its international airport in October 2017, St Helena is better placed to develop both economically and socially. The 28-bed General Hospital in the capital, Jamestown, covers all areas of acute medical and surgical care.
In this high profile position, you will provide specialist ENT assessment and treatment for patients referred by the medical officers, offering support and advice to the medical team. Advising and guiding clinical staff on improving their professional skills and care, you will train relevant staff in the latest clinical issues with at least one training session per week.
You will review and advise on appropriate pharmaceuticals and consumables and any equipment needed to improve clinical care. You must also review referral patterns for ENT cases over the past 3 years, preparing a short note on emergency distant support requirements and referral criteria. Reviewing literature on ENT in the Medical and Nursing Libraries you will advise on new materials to be procured.
Appointments for all referred patients will be made in advance of your visit and they must be seen and operated on, where equipment allows, by the end of your visit, with detailed written instructions for post-operative/follow-on care. You will work closely with the SMO at all stages to ensure treatment is acceptable and cost efficient. Findings and recommendations must be shared and discussed with the SMO and Director of Health before departure and your completion report must then be submitted within 6 weeks, outlining activities undertaken and any recommendations.
Holding full GMC registration or equivalent and good standing, with substantial post-registration experience as an ENT practitioner, you will need fluent English and the temperament to work in a small close-knit team. You will also need the ability to cope emotionally and professionally in a small isolated community with traditional values, where contact with the outside world is limited.
