Department: Accident & Emergency

Applications are invited for the above full-time posts to commence as soon as possible at Watford General Hospital, a 640 bed acute hospital. Consultants will each have an opportunity to pursue an area of specialist interest as well as developing clinical practice leadership, and multi-professional teaching and supervisory skills within a major ED.

The Emergency Department sees 100,000 new patients per year. The hospital is part of the North West London Trauma Network and sees more trauma cases than any of the other trauma units referring into the network. We thrombolyse acute stroke and have dedicated stroke nurses 24 hours a day. The minor injury stream is run by ENPs. West Herts also provides the ENP service for the Hemel Hempstead Urgent Care Centre and St Albans Minor injury Unit.

39% of adult attendances are admitted and many of these are high dependency requiring resuscitation. 25% of patients are paediatric and we have paediatric consultant shop-floor cover to include all weekdays.

The Department consists of 11 EM consultants, 1 EM consultant with a special interest in Paediatrics, 2 paediatricians, 2 ST4-6 level specialty trainees, 4 ST3 level specialty trainees, 4 clinical fellows at middle grade level, 2 ACCS, 21 GPVTS and FY2, and 3 SHO level clinical fellows. In addition there are 4 ANPs working at senior SHO level and also trainee ANPs.

The pattern of work will cover duties on a shift basis including weekends. The on calls will be shared amongst the EM consultants – the rota provides internal cover for annual and study leave according to the RCEM guidelines.

Hertfordshire is a great place to live and work. It is close to London, offering the best of both worlds for rural and urban living. There are beautiful towns and villages to live in and many great schools. The hospital is well known for its friendly atmosphere with many students and trainees returning here as consultants. University Teaching Hospital status with University College London provides an opportunity for teaching and training.

These posts are offered as full time appointments although applicants who would wish to work less-than-full-time (LTFT) are also invited to apply.

For an informal discussion please contact Dr Nida Yasin Suri (Clinical Director, Emergency Department) at or Rachel Hoey (Divisional Director, Emergency Medicine) at
