This is a 10 PA locum appointment for a Consultant in Emergency Medicine. This post will be available for a period of 12 Months.

We are looking for a dynamic individual to join our team within the Emergency Department at the Leeds General Infirmary and St James's University Hospital. The creation of the Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust represents a unique opportunity for the city to become home to one of the leading health care institutions in the world, excelling in patient care, teaching and research.

This is for one 10 PA locum appointment for a Consultant in Emergency Medicine. Part time working will be considered. The post will be available immediately.

Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust has undertaken a major investment in its Emergency Medicine services to provide specialist Consultant led trauma care at the Leeds General Infirmary which has been designated a Major Trauma Centre, and a 24/7 Consultant presence in the Emergency Department.

Main duties of the job

The Emergency Departments in Leeds have an excellent reputation for quality, innovation and education. The Emergency Medicine service treats in excess of 220,000 new patients per year. Acute services in Leeds have undergone extensive reconfiguration to deliver trauma based services and paediatrics on the LGI site and acute and elderly medicine at St James's. The Emergency Departments have undergone modifications to reflect these patient flows, including expansion of the Paediatric ED on the LGI site and Same Day Emergency Care unit at St James Hospital. All Consultants work across all areas of the Emergency Departments on both sites.

This post is part of a consultant team which delivers a 24hr Consultant presence in the Emergency Departments. It is expected that the newly appointed Consultant will share this commitment with all members of the current team. We recognise the importance of ensuring that work patterns of our Consultants are sustainable.

The successful applicant should possess FRCEM (or FRCPCH or equivalent) and should be included on the Specialist Register or within six months of being admitted to the Register for trainees if currently in a training programme within the UK, or have references which have been authorised by the Deputy Medical Director and Clinical Director.

The Trust is committed to providing sustainable consultant-delivered services to ensure the quality of the patient experience. Working patterns that provide senior cover throughout 24 hours per day, seven days per week will therefore be required. Successful candidates will be expected to work with the Trust and their consultant staffs to deliver service patterns and job plans that meet this objective.

Applicants should have established skills in Emergency Medicine and may have a subspecialty interest. A strong commitment to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and a research interest is desirable.

Excellent communication and team working skills, a strong commitment to teaching and service development are essential.

Urgent Care CSU

LOCUM CONSULTANT IN EMERGENCY MEDICINE

This post is a locum post for a period of 12 months

To deliver care to patients with Urgent Care needs at SJUH / LGI

Out-patient clinics

Supervision of patients

Contribute to Specialist Multi-disciplinary team meetings

To link with Consultant colleagues in other relevant site specialist teams within the Urgent Care CSU and across the Trust

Contribute to Specialist Multi-disciplinary team meetings

ED consultants are expected to work a rota encompassing shifts covering the full 24/7 cycle with a specific PA quantum allocated dependent for each shift.

To contribute to research, teaching, and new developments within the Emergency Department. The post holder will be encouraged to facilitate and contribute to the current clinical research programs on going in the department

To support doctors in training within the department with respects to educational supervision and appraisal and to contribute to undergraduate teaching of students in the University of Leeds Teaching Hospitals

To provide teaching in the Paediatric Emergency Department

To support the Trust in its delivery of its core services, recognising the importance of local and national standards, in particular delivery of the 4-hour Emergency Care Standard.

The appointee will have good communication skills and be able to work effectively as part of a team. They will have an understanding of current NHS management and Trusts and be aware of the responsibilities that a consultant post brings.

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential

  • MB BS (or equivalent)
  • Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment and hold a current licence to practice. Eligibility to work in the UK.
  • Is up to date and fit to practise safely
  • Should have completed a recognised training programme in Emergency Medicine Experience of organising clinical audits
  • Ability to organise efficient and smooth running of a clinical shift in a major Emergency Department. Able to provide supervision and support to junior medical staff.
  • Ability to organise and prioritise own service workload
  • Applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues demonstrated by one of the following
  • Applicants have undertaken undergraduate medical training in English. OR
  • Achieved the minimum score of 7 across all 4 of the following categories in the academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS)
  • in a single sitting within 24 months at time of application Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. (An overall minimum score of 7.5) OR
  • Achieved the minimum Grade B across all 4 of the following categories in the Occupational English Test (OET) in medicine in a single sitting within 24 months at time of application
  • Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. (You must provide your candidate number)
  • Medically fit to fulfil ALL aspects of the post, and to be able to respond quickly to emergencies, as necessary. Meets professional health requirements (in line with GMC standards/Good Medical Practice

  • Relevant higher degree Higher academic qualification (e.g. MD and /or PhD) FRCEM or equivalent qualification Membership of the College of Emergency Medicine or equivalent

  • Must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in Emergency Medicine
  • Evidence of continuous career progression consistent with personal circumstances
  • Ability to offer expert clinical opinion in complex cases
  • Ability to take full and independent care of problems arising as emergencies within a teaching hospital context Teaching experience at undergraduate or postgraduate level
  • Evidence of continuous career progression consistent with personal circumstances.
