The post holder should have good background knowledge and skills in obstetrics and gynaecology in order to contribute to the provision of both Obstetric and Gynaecological services.

Main duties of the job

All consultants will take part in a 1 in 11 rota of labour ward cover in which one week is devoted solely to labour ward and emergency gynaecology cover with all other duties cancelled in that week. These sessions involve prospective cover and must be swapped if they fall during a week in which holiday is taken.

Each of the general antenatal clinics is shared between 2 or 3 Consultants and the special interest antenatal clinics are shared between 2 consultants in order to provide continuity of care during periods of absence for on call duties or leave.

The post holder is required to cover General gynaecology clinics. Menstrual disorder, assisted reproduction and adolescent gynae clinics are available to the post holder should they be able to demonstrate appropriate skills.

The theatre allocations are currently being reviewed for all consultants depending on demand and requirements for access.

In addition to personal CPD, it is anticipated that the appointee will use SPA time to support the clinical governance frame

Job responsibilities

The successful applicant will be expected to play a full part in complying with all aspects of clinical governance.

The post holder will be expected to work with local managers and professional colleagues in the clinical contribution to management. In particular, they must support the clinical director across the whole range of managerial and administrative functions and share the responsibility for providing services within resources allocated to the Trust. All facilities within the Trust will be available to the post holder. Appropriate office space and secretarial support will be provided.

Subject to the provisions of the terms and conditions of service, they are expected to observe the Trusts agreed policies on clinical matters, and to follow the Standing Orders and financial instructions of the Trust. Where employees are managed, they will be expected to follow the local and national employment and personnel policies and procedures.

All consultants are non-resident with a middle grade obstetrician on site supported by one junior doctor (Foundation year 2 or ST1/2) on a 1 in 10 rota.

There will be prospective cover for out of hours duties and labour ward cover with a requirement to swap these duties with another consultant if they fall in weeks when holiday is planned.

Qualifications
Essential

  • MB ChB or equivalent
  • MRCOG or equivalent
  • Certificate of completion of training or equivalent (or within 6 months of CCT by interview)
  • On the specialist register of the GMC

Desirable

  • Higher degree (MD or PhD)

Experience
Essential

  • Able to deal with common emergencies in general gynaecology and obstetrics

Desirable

  • Experience of risk management
  • Experience in laparoscopic surgery
  • Interest in paediatric gynaecology

Skills
Essential

  • ATSM in Advanced Labour ward Practice
  • ATSM in Subfertility and Reproductive Health

Desirable

  • ATSM in Benign Gynaecological Surgery: Hysteroscopy
  • Intermediate gynaecology scanning module (or equivalent experience)
  • Early pregnancy scanning.

Knowledge
Essential

  • Comprehensive knowledge of obstetrics and gynaecology

  • Evidence of commitment to further knowledge and progression
