Job Details
This post is for a LAS (ST3+) Senior Clinical Fellow to work in Geriatric Medicine based at Southport Hospital. This is fixed term, to cover a period of maternity leave until February 2025, full-time post offering an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated doctor to join a dynamic, rapidly expanding team delivering multidisciplinary acute care in Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals.
Due to the short-term nature of the role/service demand, the successful candidate must hold full registration with the GMC and have existing right to live and work in the UK, at the time of application.Candidates who are not GMC registered or do not hold existing right to live and work in the UK, at the time of application will not progress through the shortlisting stage.

Main duties of the job
The post holder will be required to work fulltime and participate in a 1:13 on call rota at Registrar level.
Clinical Responsibilities
- Participate in the initial assessment and management of patients (MDT) supervising more junior members of the team.
- To lead inpatient ward rounds to ensure the on-going clinical management of patients is appropriate. To support the discharge of patients, to a place of safety, in a timely manner.
- Participate in or lead the acute take, to provide senior clinical decisions, with the support of consultant clinicians.
- Contribute to the Medical Emergency Team. Lead cardiac arrest calls.
- Contribute to GIM/medical speciality clinics.
- Liaise with other members of the clinical team and other specialties.
- Advise junior trainees and ANPs about management of patients.
- Develop skills in managing the ward to avoid unnecessary patient delays and maintain good clinical care to all patient

Specialist Regional Services
We provide the Mersey Regional Burns & Plastic Surgery Unit at Whiston Hospital and the Spinal Injuries Unit at Southport Hospital to more than 4 million people across the whole of Merseyside, West Lancashire, Cheshire, Isle of Man and North Wales.

Whiston Hospital
As part of a £338 million (PFI) investment, both Whiston and St Helens hospitals were rebuilt, resulting in modern state-of-the-art acute hospital facilities.
Whiston Hospital was completed in 2010 and is a busy teaching hospital which provides a comprehensive range of acute medical and surgical services. The hospital is also home to the busiest Emergency Department in Cheshire and Merseyside, a maternity unit, intensive care unit, hyper acute stroke unit, as well as providing paediatric and older person services including frailty. The Regional Burns and Plastic Surgery Unit provides care to people from right across Northwest England, Wales, and the Isle of Man.
Southport Hospital
Southport Hospital provides adult emergency services, intensive care, and a range of medical and surgical specialties. Outpatient services are also provided at the hospital. The hospital, which replaced the Southport General Infirmary and the Southport Promenade Hospital, opened in September 1988.
The Northwest Regional Spinal Injuries Unit provides specialist care for patients from across the Northwest, North Wales, and the Isle of Man.
St Helens Hospital
The redevelopment of St Helens Hospital was completed in 2008, and is home to St Helens Community Diagnostic Centre, Seddon Rehabilitation Unit for patients recovering from severe life-changing illness or injury, and the Lilac Centre, our award-winning cancer and chemotherapy unit.
The hospital offers a full range of outpatient clinics, day case surgery, and diagnostic suites including CT, MRI, and DEXA scan equipment. There is also an intermediate care ward and Diabetes Centre on site.
Ormskirk Hospital
Ormskirk Hospital provides a range of womens and childrens services, including accident and emergency services, surgery, and maternity care.
A full range of physiotherapy and occupational therapy services are provided at the hospital, with a purpose-built therapy unit due to open on site.
Newton Hospital
Newton inpatient unit provides rehabilitation for patients who are medically fit to leave acute care but require more therapy or clinical input to help them return home or to an assisted care environment.
Patients can also be admitted to the unit from a community setting via their GP or community matron, providing in-reach sub-acute services with short-term interventions to preserve and promote the wellbeing of the patient.

Life in Merseyside and West Lancashire

The Medical Care Group
The Medical Care Group comprises medical specialties such as Medicine for Older People, Emergency Department, Cardiology, Respiratory, Gastroenterology, Endocrinology, Haematology, ITU, HDU, CCU, Paediatrics (Ormskirk site). The Surgical Care Group includes all of the surgical disciplines, Anaesthetics and Obstetrics & Gynaecology. Support Services include Radiology, Biochemistry, Pathology, Haematology.
General Medicine Ward
Our General Medical ward consists of 28 beds. There are 3 Consultant Ward Rounds and 2 Board Rounds per week. The medical staffing consists of a 2 Consultants, Resident Clinical Fellows (FY3+) and 2 FY1 Foundation Doctors to support ward rounds.
