Job Details
The Gastroenterology team in Aneurin Bevan is innovative and award winning. Our Hepatology team were the first in Wales to be awarded the prestigious IQILS level 2 accreditation and our CNS team is nationally recognised for its innovative approach to palliative care of liver patients, our alcohol liaison team has also won recognition and awards location and nationally. Our IBD team has strong links to the Welsh Government, actively participating in the development of national standards of care. Our Endoscopy team is at the forefront of technology, introducing innovative methods of polyp removal and trialling AI technology in adenoma detection.
This post will include on-call work, undertake on the grange university hospital site. This is an unselected medical intake with referrals from GP, ED and step up from peripheral hospitals. The on call team is supported by a medical SPR and acute consultant undertaking regular post take rounds.

Main duties of the job
Gastroenterology in-patients are cared for solely in the Grange Hospital, junior doctors in this post will have exposure to acute GI bleeds, liver conditions including decompensated liver disease and liver failure, and luminal conditions such as acute severe colitis and intestinal failure. The junior doctor team are supported by a Hepatology and Luminal consultant, 4 specialty registrars and a team of IMT and foundation doctors as well as Physicians Associates, alcohol liaison, dieticians, pharmacists and an excellent nursing team.
Our acute patients have access to pathways facilitating early discharge including acute day unit (GACU), based in Royal Gwent Hospital, SDEC hot clinics and access to CNS clinics for IBD and liver disease. In addition, our Gastroenterology team undertake outpatient clinics and endoscopy at sites across the health board. Attendance at transitional or out patient clinics is encouraged for our junior doctors.
Patients have access to endoscopy 24/7, with many acute bleeding patients having their endoscopy in the Grange, there are opportunities to observe patients undergoing procedures and learn how to manage patients pre and post endoscopy. Junior doctors will also develop skills in ascitic drainage and taps, insertion of feeding tubes and assessment of critically ill patients.
