Job Details
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Associate Specialist in Acute Respiratory Medicine to join a small team consisting of two consultants and a junior doctor, joining a larger Acute Medicine team. You will be the lynchpin of this small specialty team in which you will be encouraged to fully develop specialty skills and audit/research interests in a very friendly and relaxed environment. The acute medicine team consists of ten Consultant Physicians with a full complement of junior staff, managing your share of acute medical admissions to 65 inpatient beds plus High Dependency/Coronary Care and Intensive Care units. The Acute Medicine on call rota is on a 1:8 basis, currently attracting 4 PAs. Consultant specialties in the Division of Medicine include Cardiology, Diabetes, Elderly Care, Endocrinology & Metabolic Medicine, Gastroenterology, Nephrology, Oncology, Rehabilitation Medicine, Respiratory Medicine, Rheumatology and Neurology. Other Consultant-led services in the Directorate of Medicine are Dermatology. The successful candidate will work with a Consultant, Clinical Fellow (F3) and a Foundation Year One Doctor. In addition to the on-call team, a Foundation Year Two doctor is in place at weekends to support the EAU Department.
Main duties of the job
1. The appointee will work under the supervision of the Respiratory Consultant heading the Respiratory division and is expected to actively collaborate with a team of specialist Respiratory nurses who provide a community and hospital basedRespiratory service and also with lung cancer specialist nurse ( when appointed as planned soon).
2. The appointee will be expected to give advice when required to clinical nurse practitioners and to advise junior medical staff where appropriate.
3. On call commitments to acute Medicine rota on 1 in 8.
4. Respiratory clinic twice weekly excluding on call days and when on night on calls.
5. Able to perform pleural procedures under ultrasound guidance.
6. Planning and interpreting investigations and dealing with associated administration.
7. Engaging in ward rounds and supporting consultants in general ward work.
8. Support the teaching of Medical Students. Teaching and supervising medical students and junior doctors, with opportunities for funded teaching time.
9. Attend formal educational events including Audit Meetings.
10. Attendance at basic life support training as per trust policy.
11. Completion of at least one in depth audit yearly.
12. Comply with contracted hours.
13. The Associate Specialist physician will be expected to get an annual appraisal completed for revalidation purposes as per GMC requirements.
14. The Associate Specialist will be expected to adhere to Trust and Directorate policies and respiratory division protocols.
About us

Job responsibilities
Duties involve care of inpatients on a general/respiratory ward and those on High Dependency Unit and Intensive Care Unit.
The successful candidate will be expected to have completed core medical training or its equivalent and have achieved MRCP diploma or its equivalent. The individual will therefore have the knowledge and experience expected of a Medical Registrar admitting patients from the Emergency Department and from the community at the request of family practitioners. Specialist knowledge in Respiratory Medicine is not expected and training will be provided by the Consultant Pulmonary Physician and the team.
The appointee will attend two respiratory clinics per week. We also run weekly lung cancer MDT and general respiratory MDT where we also discuss our patients on antifibrotics and asthma patients. We welcome specialist interests and would encourage applicants to discuss these with us. Our bronchoscopy list takes place in the endoscopy suite. Patients generally attends as a day case. Endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) and PET CT scanning take place in Southampton. Radiotherapy is also delivered in Southampton.
Attendance at local and national (UK)meetings is encouraged, and study leave supported.
The appointee will have the opportunity to participate in, and contribute to, educational activities run by the Department and jointly with colleagues in the Division of Medicine. This involves Friday lunchtime Grand round and dedicated middle grade teaching & development days.
MDT conferences take place with the tertiary services provided at Southampton General Hospital. This involves discussion of patients with interstitial lung disease and malignancy. Patients requiring specialist input for management of pulmonary hypertension are referred to the Brompton Hospital in London. We will work together to maintain a culture that develops your career growth and also encourage to take part in different educational activates and CPD.

Essential
- Experience in both General & Acute Medicine and Respiratory Medicine at middle grade level.
- Ability to carry out the following procedures: venepuncture, arterial puncture, lumbar punctures, chest drains and pleural aspirations under Ultrasound guidance. Central venous line insertion under US guidance.
- Experience with Acute unselected Medical take at a middle grade level with effective leadership skills to junior colleagues.
- Previous Management Responsibility / Leadership Experience.
- IT Literacy.
Personal Attributes

- Able to work flexibly in a changing health service.

Qualifications
Essential
- MB BS or equivalent from recognised medical school.
- Full MRCP UK (or equivalent).
- Medicine at middle grade level.
- Full Registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) with a Licence to practise (for overseas candidates it is mandatory that a licence is obtained prior to appointment).
- Clinical Experience in an NHS environment.
- ALS trained.
