This post in Intensive Care Medicine offers an excellent opportunity to work in a dynamic critical care unit where you will gain experience in the management of a wide range of medical pathologies and be able to develop key managerial and governance skills. The hospital is part of the North East London Adult Critical Care Network and is supported by the tertiary centres at the Royal London Hospital (neuro, trauma and vascular) and St Bartholomew's hospital (Cardiac and haem oncology).

Main duties of the job

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESNUHo Provide high-quality clinical care to critically ill patients whether in the Intensive Care Unit.o Work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team to develop and implement treatment plans for patients.o Ensure the highest standards of communication with patients, their families and the MDT, including maintaining an accurate written record.o Participate in teaching and training activities for medical students, doctors, and other healthcare professionals.o Contribute to quality improvement initiatives and clinical governance processes.o Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records.o Participate in the on-call rota for the Intensive Care Unit

Job description
Job responsibilities

The posts commitment will be to the Critical Care Department at Newham University Hospital including the Critical Care Outreach Team.The duties will be as per the attached job plan. They are not definitive and may be changed in accordance with the needs of the department. The following represents an outline of the duties of the post and will, together with the job plan, be reviewed on an annual basis in accordance with the Trusts performance review scheme.

ClinicalAs a member of the team the post holder will be responsible for the review and assessment of patients in the critical care as well as supporting in the review of referrals. Some shifts will be spent working with the CCOT team. The post holder will ensure the provision of evidence based care is delivered to the patients and will have responsibility for communication with other members of the multi-disciplinary team and with family members. The service is fully supported by the ICU consultant who has ultimate responsibility for the management of the patient. All significant decisions and plans, including decisions to admit, discharge and transfer, need to be discussed with the duty consultant and the outcome of these discussions need to be accurately documented in the patient record.

Clinical GovernanceThe appointee will be expected to input into the Clinical Governance activities of the Trust to maintain the quality standards of clinical services. There is a monthly Governance meeting, and the hospital holds a weekly Patient Safety Event meetings. The post holder will be expected to actively participate in all aspects of governance activity to ensure that excellence of care will flourish.

Management

The appointee will be expected participate in the management activities of the ICU at Newham University Hospital by attending monthly staff meetings and collaborating with quality Improvement projects.

Research

The Department has an excellent record of contribution to several portfolio research studies as well as multiple projects led by Dr Juan Martin. This includes Recovery, to which we were a major recruiter, and many published papers on high flow oxygen therapy, haemofiltration for hypertriglyceridaemic pancreatitis, and case studies.

Teaching and training

The Trust is committed to sustaining and advancing the provision of medical, dental, nursing and other professional education and to the delivery of high quality postgraduate and undergraduate training. The teaching program is led by Dr Christou.A recent HEE review of ICU training at Newham gave very positive feedback. The trainees felt well supported and supervised, with access to many learning opportunities.Study leave is supported by the trust with 10 days leave per year. Funding can be applied for to support the post holder to a maximum of £400 per year.

The post-holder will be expected to participate fully in the following scheduled academic activities in Critical Care:

Regular bedside teaching Journal Club Joint Critical Care/Anaesthetic teaching sessions Monthly morbidity and Mortality meetings Simulation sessions and other courses. Attendance at relevant Hospital Grand Rounds Induction and in-house teaching of medical students from QMUL and overseas students and trainees.

Continuing Professional DevelopmentThe post-holder is expected to fully engage in the annual appraisal process and will construct a personal development plan which will be reviewed on annual basis. The development plan will take account of general and specialist requirements for professional development issued by the relevant Royal Colleges, the General Medical Council, the Chief Medical Officer and the Trust itself. The post holder will be supported by appropriate study leave allocations with internal cover.

Critical incident reportingThe post-holder will have responsibility for ensuring that critical incidents and near misses are appropriately reported into the Trusts Risk management systems.
