Required to join our friendly clinical team in this replacement post. This post is focussed purely on endocrinology, with no diabetes component, and represent a rare opportunity for endocrinology sub-specialty development for interested and ambitious candidates. There will be an opportunity for the appointees to develop a specialist interest over time, which aligns with the strategic needs of the department. We are aa busy regional tertiary centre providing high quality care for people living with endocrinology conditions. The endocrinology department consists of 5 endocrinology consultants and 8 specialist nurses. The service currently delivers around 14,600 outpatient appointments per year with an active caseload of approximately 11,000 patients and strong referral growth. Weprovide clinical outpatient services in all the major branches of endocrinology including pituitary disorders, osteoporosis and metabolic bone disease, fracture liaison service, adrenal endocrinology, endocrine late effects of cancer, thyroid cancer, neuroendocrine tumours, thyroid eye disease, antenatal endocrinology, transitional endocrinology (with paediatric colleagues). We also provide a dedicated inpatient endocrinology referral service for the Trust and advice and guidance support for Leeds. The department benefits from close links with dedicated endocrine surgery and neurosurgery and regional MDTs in adrenal, pituitary, thyroid and parathyroid disease.

Main duties of the job

The diabetes and endocrinology team also jointly contribute to the care of general medical in-patients on one medical ward.The ideal candidate will be innovative, forward thinking and committed to developing an integrated service to support the population we serve. Applicants should have established skills in general and specialist endocrinology and general medicine. They should be able to provide high quality patient-centred care, excel in team-working and accept shared operational responsibility for the service. A strong commitment to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching is expected and a research interest is desirable.

The successful applicant should possess MRCP (or equivalent) and should be included on the Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT at the time of interview, if currently within a training programme within the UK. In accordance with the consultant appointment regulations, all other categories of doctors must be on the Specialist Register.

To assist in the provision of multi-disciplinary out-patient services / clinics in endocrinology, ensuring we meet our objectives of a responsive, patient centred, and high quality service.

To contribute to the development and modernisation of endocrine services with the aim of improving capacity and quality of services to both the local Leeds and regional populations.

To develop an area of sub-specialty within endocrinology that interdigitates with the activities of the current Endocrine Consultants and increases availability of specialist endocrine care to our patients.

To contribute to the research agenda of the Endocrine Unit, as well as developing independent areas of research with the sub-specialty area.

To promote patient and public involvement within the services provided by the Endocrine Unit, including involvement with local and national endocrine patient support groups.

The successful candidate will be one of the team looking after General Medical in-patients under the care of the diabetes and endocrinology team, including on-call cover. This will involve working patterns to ensure ward continuity, potentially including ward-blocks with annualised hours/ time off in lieu. This includes both out-of-hours cover in addition to post-take ward rounds during normal working hours.

To contribute to the out-of-hours provision of acute medicine on a rota alongside consultant colleagues from acute and respiratory medicine.

To participate in the education, training, and supervision of staff of all grades and disciplines, including contributing to the design of programs and logistics of local and regional diabetes and endocrinology training meetings.

The precise duties and responsibilities of the post may be varied depending on circumstances and subject to negotiation with the Lead Clinician and Clinical Director.

• Should have completed a recognised training programme in Endocrinology and General Medicine.
• Evidence of the ability to carry out medical research.
• Experience in training undergraduate medical students and postgraduate doctors.
• Experience of participation in regular clinical audit.

• Previous experience of supervising research by junior staff.
• Previous attendance on Appraisal Techniques and Small Group Teaching Workshops.

• Must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in Endocrinology, General Internal Medicine and relevant sub-specialities.
