Job responsibilities
Obstetric Departments
Women's Clinical Service Unit (CSU) in Leeds provides comprehensive secondary care for the local population and enjoys a position as a regional centre for all subspecialties. There are 23 obstetric Consultants within the Women's Clinical Service Unit. The St James's Maternity Unit, which is located in Gledhow Wing, deals with approximately 4,700 deliveries per year. Antenatal Outpatients
In addition to high risk antenatal clinics, there are a variety of specialist clinics run in conjunction with the relevant Physicians on either the St James's or LGI site. These include a Cardiac Clinic, Renal Clinic, Diabetic Clinic, Substance Abuse Clinic, Endocrine Clinic (thyroid, adrenal and pituitary), Teenage Pregnancy Clinic, Preterm Prevention Clinic, Obstetric Haematology Clinic and a Rheumatology clinic.
The Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit is located at St James's and, although it comes under the auspices of Gynaecology, there are naturally close links between the Obstetric Departments and EPAU. A recurrent miscarriage clinic is run from the EPAU providing both a diagnostic service and support in early pregnancy. Fetal Medicine The Fetal Medicine Unit runs clinics five days a week at LGI offering invasive prenatal diagnosis, diagnosis and management of congenital anomalies, rhesus disease including in-utero transfusions. The Building the Leeds Way project is an exciting development that involves, amongst other projects, the construction of a major new hospital at the Leeds General Infirmary site. On completion, the maternity services from both current sites will merge to this new hospital, creating one of the largest and newest maternity units in the country Gynaecology
The post holder will join a team of 11 consultants. There is also a large team of nurse specialists who deliver clinical expertise in sub-specialty areas of Urogynaecology, Colposcopy and Hysteroscopy. The CSU provides secondary and tertiary services for Leeds, Yorkshire and significant parts of the North of England.
The Leeds Centre for Women's Health comprises a gynaecology ward, the gynaecology day-case unit, acute gynaecology and early pregnancy unit (GATU & EPU) and is based on the St James's site. Our outpatient facility is located close to the inpatient unit, and enables the team to undertake more procedures in the outpatient setting and with the necessary facilities for assessment, diagnosis and treatment, usually on the same day. This department has recently incorporated gynaecology ultrasound scanning facilities to streamline the pathway. This hub is the home of the gynaecology nurse specialists, who already deliver a higher volume of nurse-led diagnosis and treatment clinics than any other centre nationally.
We work closely with community gynaecology services and launched the Integrated Gynaecology Service in partnership Leeds Community Healthcare NHS Trust in 2018. This has been very successful and enabled both teams to care for patients in the right setting.
