Locum Consultant in Urology with special interest in Pelvic Oncology

We are looking for an enthusiastic Locum Consultant Urologist for an immediate start, who has completed a Urology specialist training programme and is able to demonstrate dedicated training experience in Pelvic Uro-Oncology, to fill this post within the Urology Department at the St Jamess University Hospital. The Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust is one of the leading health care institutions in the world, excelling in patient care, teaching and research. You will join a department of eighteen urologists who currently provide secondary urological care for the people of Leeds and tertiary urological care for the people of Yorkshire and beyond.

The successful applicant should possess FRCS (Urol) or equivalent and should be included on the Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT at the time of interview, if currently within a training programme within the UK. In accordance with the consultant appointment regulations, all other categories of doctors must be on the Specialist Register.

Applicants should have established skills in General and Specialist Urology and all applicants will be expected to support the general elective and emergency workload of the Department. The post holder will be also expected to support the pelvic oncology service (prostate and bladder cancer).

A strong commitment to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and a research interest is desirable.

Main duties of the job

2. OBJECTIVES OF THE POST

The overriding purpose of this job is to support the provision of highest quality diagnostic and therapeutic patient care, for prostate and bladder cancer patients through personal actions and continuous improvement such as the development of focal treatments for the bladder and prostate pathway, while working closely with the existing team of 4 pelvic oncology consultants.

The appointed candidate will support the existing team of pelvic oncology consultants to achieve and sustain performance against key national waiting time standards from referral to treatment for suspected prostate/bladder cancer patients within 2ww, 28- and 62-day waiting times.

To support the existing team of pelvic oncology consultants to manage unexpected surges in suspected prostate/bladder cancer referrals and the increased demand on follow up numbers within current resources.

To support the delivery of general elective and specialist urology as well as emergency workload of the department.

To achieve and sustain performance against key national waiting time standards including delivery of the 18 week standard from referral to treatment.

To improve the quality of care provided to patients and increase the scope for innovation.

To participate in service development and business planning for the department in collaboration with the other Consultant colleagues within urology and other related specialties constituting prostate and bladder cancer MDT and primary care commissioners within the local CCGs

Professional supervision, support and management of junior medical staff including the observance of local employment and human resource policies and procedures

To improve the efficiency and productivity of the urology department and contribute to the role of Leeds as a training centre for urology.

To maintain and develop clinical research in urology.

To contribute to and improve the quality of Undergraduate and Postgraduate training in urology.

Person Specification
Eligibility, Fitness to practice, and Language Skills
Essential

• Be eligible for full registration with, and hold a current licence to practise from, the GMC at intended start date
• Eligibility to work in the UK.
• Is up to date and fit to practise safely
• Should have completed a recognised training programme or be within 6 months of obtaining CCST and be on the Specialist Register
• All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues

Qualifications
Essential

• MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
• MRCS or equivalent qualification

Desirable

• Higher degree e.g. MD/PhD relevant to the subspecialty.

Experience
Essential

• Candidates should hold a primary medical qualification and MRCS (or equivalent).
• Must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in Urology
• Specifically, he/she must demonstrate higher training in Pelvic Oncology
• Evidence of continuous career progression consistent with personal circumstances
