The Department of Histopathology is looking for a locum Consultant to join their team for a period of 12 months. The role is for 10 Programmed Activities (PA's) and we welcome applications from a Locum Consultant Histopathologist with expertise in Lymphoma (solid tissue only), gynaecological pathology along with skin and GI (desirable -familiarity with pseudomyxoma peritonei) pathology. The successful candidate will also contribute to specimen dissection.The medical establishment is made up of 10 consultant Histopathologists, with junior support from the deanery rotation and an international clinical fellowship post.The appointee will be based at The Christie and together with colleagues already in post and will provide input to lymphoma, gynaecological and gastro-intestinal histopathology team to meet the needs of the service. The successful applicant will share the diagnostic workload with the other consultant histopathologists and give input into the relevant multidisciplinary team meetings (MDTs).

Main duties of the job

The Department of Histopathology/ GM-HCDP service (Lymphoma) provides diagnostic tumour pathology services to the Christie NHS Foundation Trust for biopsies and surgical specimens from the theatres, wards and out-patients in the hospital and pathological material for review from other hospitals in the North West for cancer patients referred to the clinical, surgical and medical oncologists.Consultation is also provided on problematic cases, referred by other histopathologists within, and occasionally outside, the region. There is no on-call rota or requirement for weekend work.

ORGANISATIONAL ARRANGEMENTSThis post is for 10 Programmed Activities (PAs) for a Locum Consultant Histopathologist with expertise in primary Lymphoma (solid tissue/ cytology FFPE samples only), Gynecological pathology along with non-specialist skin and some GI pathology. There is also a requirement to undertake specimen dissection.JOB PURPOSEThis is a locum consultant post based at the Christie NHS Foundation Trust. Appointment of the post holder will enable the activities of the department to be maintained and meet the clinical needs of the hospital.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The medical establishment is made up of 10 Consultant Histopathologists, with junior support from the deanery rotation and clinical fellow post.

The appointee will be based at The Christie and together with colleagues already in post will provide senior input to all Lymphoma, Gynecological histopathology work to meet the needs of the service. The successful applicant will share the workload for Skin with the other consultant histopathologists and give input into the relevant multidisciplinary team meetings (MDTs). An ability to provide some support to the GI histopathology team (desirable - familiarity with reporting pseudomyxoma peritonei pathology) is also required.

The appointee will have office accommodation and access to a secretarial service at the Christie.

Diagnostic histopathology

The Department of Histopathology provides diagnostic tumour pathology services to the Christie NHS Foundation Trust:

a) pathological material for review from other hospitals in the North West for cancer patients referred to the clinical, surgical and medical oncologists. The GM-HCDP service (Lymphoma) similarly receives diagnostic case material from within GM Trust and in-house generated samples. Further onboarding of external GM Trusts is planned. Clinical reporting includes use of both local LIMS (TDHC) and HODS regional LIMS haemato-pathology platform (note - all neoplastic myeloid pathology/ flow-cytometry is reported elsewhere [MFT- lead providers GM-HCDP] and participation in reporting of these samples would therefore not be required). The GI pathology service also receives specimens from the national specialist pseudomyxoma peritonei service at the Christie.b) biopsies and surgical specimens from the theatres, wards and out-patients in the hospitalc) pathological material for review from other hospitals in the North West for cancer patients referred to the clinical, surgical and medical oncologists.

Consultation is also provided on problematic cases, referred by other histopathologists within, and occasionally outside, the region.

There is no on-call rota or requirement for weekend work.

The Histopathology service is managed in accordance with the Strategic Review of Pathology Services, notably in relation to paragraphs 4.22 4.26.

MDT meetings relevant to this post:

Lymphoma MDT cover (as needed) online (Monday [SRFT/WWL/ RBH] Tuesday [MFT] Wednesday [ROH] Friday - in person, on site [am- Cutaneous lymphoma / pm- CFT/ SHH/ Macclesfield) would be expected to be provided by the appointee, as per clinical requirements and rota split between the existing lymphoma service consultants. Gynaecological MDT cover (as needed) Gastrointestinal MDT cover (as needed)

PATHOLOGY SERVICES

On 21st June 2014, The Christie NHS Foundation Trust entered into a partnership with Synlab UK Limited, the UK division of one of the largest European independent providers of pathology services, to provide and develop Christie pathology services.

The consultant histopathologists are directly employed by The Christie NHS Trust and provide their service to the Christie Pathology Partnership (CPP)

The on-site Christie Pathology Partnership services comprise of: Histopathology Blood Scienceso Biochemistryo Haematologyo Blood Transfusion Stem Cell Processing Breast Tumour Receptors (regional service) Mortuary & Bereavement services

Other services, such as Microbiology, Virology and Cytology are contracted services that are performed off-site.
