Required to fill this replacement post within the Cardiology Department at the Leeds General Infirmary.
Leeds General Infirmary is one of the leading interventional cardiology units in the United Kingdom, with a national & international profile for service, innovation, and research. LGI serves a regional population of 3.2 million in West Yorkshire, and performs over 1100 primary PCI procedures annually, with around 2600 PCI procedures in total. There is a full range of advanced coronary intervention, including a high-volume CTO service, rotational atherectomy, orbital atherectomy, laser, IVUS, OCT, FFR, CFR etc. The service is delivered currently by 10 Leeds-based consultants, with a further 13 visiting interventionists on the rota. There is a very active Professorial research group led by Professor Blackman, Professor Wheatcroft and Dr Bulluck.
There are 3 dedicated cardiac MRI scanners, which facilitate multiple protocols including stress and non-MRI compatible device imaging, providing a tertiary service to the region, and performing 2500 scans per annum.
The successful applicant will specialise in advanced coronary intervention with a commitment to the cardiac MRI service. A strong commitment to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and a research interest is desirable.

Main duties of the job
We are seeking an individual focused on excellence and innovation in coronary intervention, who will further develop the national and international profile of the unit. The post-holder will contribute to the rotas for acute and primary PCI, as well as ward care of coronary artery disease patients. A strong commitment to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching is desirable.
The successful applicant should possess MRCP (or equivalent) and should be included on the Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT at the time of interview, if currently within a training programme within the UK. In accordance with the consultant appointment regulations, all other categories of doctors must be on the Specialist Register.

Job responsibilities
Leeds Teaching Hospitals is appointing one interventional cardiology consultant post with a specialist interest in coronary intervention and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). This is a post created to replace colleagues stepping back from aspects of their clinical roles. The appointee will be based at the Yorkshire Heart Centre (on the Leeds General Infirmary site). The appointee will be on the on-call rota for coronary intervention including primary PCI and will be responsible for assessment and management of in-patients with acute coronary syndromes and out-patients with ischaemic heart disease/chest pain in the cardiology unit at Leeds General Infirmary. The appointee will support the cardiac MRI team deliver a service to in- and out-patients.
The appointee will contribute to the delivery and development of complex coronary intervention in Leeds and to enhance service and reputation of the centre nationally and internationally.
The appointee will participate in the existing out-of-hours coronary intervention rota, on-call 1 weekday night every 5 weeks, and 1 weekend (Friday/Sunday) in 10. In addition to PPCI, out-of-hours on-call activity will expand to include non-STEMI patients. In-hours there is a 1 week in 10 rota for acute intervention (Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm). The appointee will join a team of 10 interventional cardiologists responsible for the assessment and management of ACS patients on the wards. The appointee will provide 1PA of activity to the cardiac MRI service.
There is a separate consultant on call rota for general cardiology.
There are currently 33 consultant cardiologists working part or full-time in Leeds. All consultants are based at the Yorkshire Heart Centre on the Leeds General Infirmary site. There are currently 10 consultants (9 NHS, 1 University) delivering the interventional and adult acquired structural programme at Leeds.
There are seven full time catheter labs at the Yorkshire Heart Centre (YHC), currently nearing completion of a high specification refurbishment. The Yorkshire Heart Centre provides a coronary interventional service to Leeds and West Yorkshire currently delivering 2600 PCIs procedures (1100 PPCIs) annually currently led by Dr Jennifer Rossington. The YHC is the regional lead for TAVI and delivers 250-300 procedures annually. The YHC as a single centre delivers the highest number of PPCI and TAVI procedures nationally. There is a strong research base within interventional cardiology.
There are three dedicated cardiac MRI scanners at YHC supported by 9 consultants (6 Leeds based, 3 visiting) performing 2500 scans per annum. The department has a highly active research programme and facilitates multiple protocols including stress, cardiac device and congenital image acquisition.
There are active teaching and research links with the Leeds School of Medicine and the University of Leeds, both well situated on adjacent sites.
The main objective is to contribute to the delivery and development of the coronary intervention and cardiac MRI service. Applicants with a specific interest in complex coronary intervention will be encouraged.

Essential
- Should have completed a recognised training programme in cardiology.
- Should have completed a recognised 2-year subspecialty training programme in interventional cardiology.
- Should have level 2 accreditation/certification in Cardiac MRI.
- Evidence of the ability to carry out medical research.
- Experience in training undergraduate medical students and postgraduate doctors.
- Experience of participation in regular clinical audit.
Desirable
- Dedicated Interventional Fellow training programme for 1 year.
- Current EACVI level 3 certification in Cardiac MRI.
- Previous experience of supervising research by junior staff.
- Previous attendance on Appraisal Techniques and Small Group Teaching Workshops.
