Job Details
This is a full-time substantive replacement post for a breast surgeon to join a highly cohesive and dynamic breast team based at the Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust. The post holder will need significant experience in breast surgery including assessment and diagnosis, pre-operative work-up and operative expertise including complex oncoplastic procedures and post operative planning of adjuvant treatments.
The appointed candidate will join a Breast team that treats a high volume of breast cancers and also manages benign breast diseases. The candidate will join a team of 5 Breast Surgeons. The Unit additionally has surgical trainee including a CT, a higher surgical trainee and a National Oncoplastic Fellow. The team is supported by PA/ACP team, BCNs, FH nurse specialists and breast research nurses. There are 3 Breast Plastic surgeons additionally supporting the Service.

Main duties of the job
You should be able to demonstrate experience in working within a breast MDT and leading treatment decisions for complex breast cancer cases. You should be on the specialist register or within six months of CCT.
It would be highly desirable if you have completed an Oncoplastic Fellowship and has previous management experience within the NHS. Teaching experience and higher qualification in medical qualification would also be desirable as well as prior experience in recruiting into clinical trials
You will be required to support 3 OPD sessions, an all-day theatre list, attend MDT, provide cross site cover for joint plastic surgical cases and support the on-call breast surgery rota. There will be an expectation to be involved with undergraduate and post graduate teaching.
You should possess FRCS (exit) (or equivalent) and should be included on the Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT at the time of interview, if currently within a training programme within the UK. In accordance with the consultant appointment regulations, all other categories of doctors must be on the Specialist Register.
Applicants should have established skills in breast surgery and its related specialties including oncoplastic breast surgery. A strong commitment to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and a research interest is desirable.
Consideration will be given to applicants who wish to work full or part time and those wishing to job share.

Job description
Job responsibilities
Breast services in Leeds offer a range of diagnostic, surgical, therapeutic and support services, from several sites, to patients referred from a population of some 900,000. Current and significant experience in the surgical management of breast disease is a prerequisite for this post.
The appointed candidate will join a surgical team of 5 established consultants. The Unit manages about 11000 new referrals and provides care for about 700 cancers (symptomatic and screening) annually. The team provides all oncoplastic procedures including reconstructions. The wider team includes 3 breast plastic surgeons, 5 substantive and 1 locum consultant breast radiologists, 5 consultant breast pathologists, 2 breast clinical (+ 1 experienced associate in clinical oncology) and 3 medical oncology consultants, 7 breast care nurses, 4 breast research nurses, 3 family history nurse specialist, 6 ANP/PA team, secretarial team and MDT coordinators. There is very good management support.
The team provides all forms of reconstructions and has a high volume of free flap reconstructions, approximately 70 annually. The appointed candidates majority of clinical work will be at the St. James's University Hospital site. There will be a 1 in 6 commitment to perform joint cases at the Leeds General Infirmary site with the Plastic Surgical Team.

The Unit has a very active research portfolio and regularly recruits into several ongoing clinical trials. The Unit has a very good teaching record and regularly hosts National Oncoplastic Fellows.
