Applications are invited for a Locum Consultant in Acute Gastroenterology and General Medicine to join our Gastroenterology team at Bedford Hospital, part of Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust. The contract will be fixed term for 12 months, providing maternity cover.

We are a friendly, dynamic, innovative and future focussed department. You will join our team at an exciting time at Bedfordshire Hospitals within the newly merged Foundation Trust. Innovation in the delivery of high quality medical care is a key requirement of this role.

We will actively support a new colleague that will complement and enhance our existing team.

Main duties of the job

This post holder:
  • Provide a consultant based service to the patients attending the gastro ward with most duties being ward round and/or shop floor based to ensure early consultant review and decision making.
  • Participate in Gastroenterology ward rounds and daily week day ward MDT meetings, working closely with the gastroenterology consultant of the week who will provide direct input where required and emergency endoscopy during working hours.
  • Supervise Junior medical staff, including clinical and educational supervision if appropriate expertise.
  • Provide outpatient clinics as agreed.

  • Medical degree, relevant postgraduate qualification

  • MD or equivalent high degree or evidence of relevant research

  • Full GMC registration and planned entry onto the GMC specialist register (CCT/CESR)
Clinical Experience

  • DGH work, General Medicine experience, independent responsibility for clinical work, commitment to assessment of patients with eating disorders
Clinical Effectiveness

  • Understanding of clinical governance, ongoing CPD, experience of guideline appraisal, local audit, interpret and apply clinical research
Desirable
  • National audit, participation in quality/service improvement projects
Teaching
Essential
  • Knowledge and ability to teach trainees and medical students
Desirable
  • Teaching the teachers or similar, educational supervision training
Personal skills
