The post holder will be expected to participate fully in the provision of general surgical services to the Hospital. The post holder will work on a rotation within Breast Surgery, General Surgery and Colorectal Surgery.

Post holders would be expected to deputise from time to time for absent colleagues, to perform additional duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances & to be available for such irregular commitments outside normally rostered duties as are essential for continuity of patient care.

You will be expected to see all vascular emergency referrals from the wards or A& E and liaise with the 'Vascular Network' consultant on call via switchboard for appropriate advice and transfer as necessary. (There is no elective vascular surgery at Airedale, Mr Molloy works here part time undertaking OP clinics and seeing inpatient referrals with all elective vascular surgery being transferred to the nearby Bradford Royal Infirmary). Middle grades out of hours are also responsible for Urology cover, with AGH Consultants on call.

As well as providing ward and on call cover for the General surgery division, the post holder will have the opportunity to work clinically in Theatre, Endoscopy and Outpatients depending on experience and rota availability.

Main duties of the job

The on call rota and weekly timetables are organised by 2 senior middle grades and disseminated weekly.

The normal working day is from 8am to 5 pm.

On call shifts are 0800-1300 (CEPOD & PTWR)

1300 - 1700 (evening PTWR)

1700-0830

There are regular handovers at the following times when on call.

  • 0800 - night middle grade and AM on call middle grade meet in theatre recovery for huddle to discuss CEPOD cases - then all relocate to ward 7 office for handover
  • 1300- between the morning and afternoon mid grades.
  • 1700- between the afternoon middle grade and the night middle grade.

As the on calls are non-resident, you are expected to be contactable via the long range pager and/or mobile phone at all times while on call. You are also expected to have a close input into the care of all surgical and urological admissions and have a low threshold to escalate issues to the appropriate consultants on call.

As well as providing ward and on call cover for the General surgery division, the post holder will have the opportunity to work clinically in Theatre, Endoscopy and Outpatients depending on experience and rota availability.
