Children's Health Queensland Hospital and Health Service (CHQ HHS), Queensland, Australia is a recognised leader in paediatric healthcare, teaching and research. As part of CHQ HHS, the integrated Child and Youth Mental Health Service (CYMHS) offers specialised mental health services for children and young people (birth to 18 years) who experience severe and complex mental health problems, and where their needs cannot be met by other services. 

The Queensland Children’s Gender Service (QCGS) sits within CYMHS. Based at the Queensland Children’s Hospital, it delivers outpatient care for children diverse in gender identity through affirmative, family focused, interdisciplinary assessment and specialist care. 

The Queensland Children’s Gender Service External Clinical Service Evaluation report was released on 19 July 2024; Queensland Children’s Gender Service (health.qld.gov.au).  CHQ HHS is seeking a suitably qualified Staff Specialist (Child and Adolescent Psychiatry) to provide 1FTE psychiatry clinical leadership for the implementation of the recommendations from this Service Evaluation. 

  • In accordance with the CHQ HHS core values, to fulfil the accountabilities of this role you will:   
  • Provide expert psychiatric clinical leadership for the QCGS to implement the recommendations of the Queensland Children’s Gender Service External Clinical Service Evaluation. 
  • Support the development of a high functioning child and adolescent mental health service at the QCGS, inclusive of inpatient, outpatient, outreach, telehealth and evidence informed models of care within an interdisciplinary model of care. 
  • Foster and promote the development of an innovative, evidence informed network of child and adolescent gender services across Queensland.
  • Build effective and timely communication and consultation processes between the QCGS, and with families, referring clinicians, hospital and health services, other government departments, NGO’s and stakeholders.
  • Ensure compliance with contemporary healthcare safety and quality standards and participate in CHQ assurance processes including Accreditation. 
  • Actively participate in a working environment supporting quality human resources management practices including employment equity, anti-discrimination, occupational health and safety, ethical behaviour, and sensitivity to client issues. 
  • Encourage and support the development of high-quality research within the QCGS.

Current registration with/or eligible for registration with AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency) as a specialist in psychiatry, and possessing or eligible for a Certificate in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP), are mandatory qualifications. Previous experience in the assessment and management of gender diverse and transgender children and young people is highly desirable. 

Appointment to this position is dependent upon written confirmation of a Scope of Clinical Practice (SOCP) from the Executive Director of Medical Services.
