Main duties of the job

Obstetrics

The Obstetric service provides a comprehensive local service, and the team manage all midwifery services in the hospital and the community in a new Labour ward. Such is the quality of care in Barnsley many women choose to come from the wider region to deliver here. Progress towards improved continuity of care has been considerable and the development of the role of midwifery staff has been significant. The unit has been an early adopter of the SBL care bundles and is progressing very well with SBLV3. The unit is in the top ten nationally for its detection rate for growth restriction.

There are multidisciplinary specialist clinics such as Medical Disorders, Fetal Medicine, Perinatal Mental Health, Preterm Clinic and a high risk Maternal diabetes MDT clinic run with Consultant Diabetologists, DSNs and a lead midwife for diabetes. The postholder will also have an opportunity to work towards running the Medical Disorders clinic if so desired.
Gynaecology
There are well established services providing, in addition to General Gynaecology, accredited specialised clinics including Colposcopy, Urogynaecology, 2 week wait Cancer referral, Hysteroscopy, Vulval, EPAU and Termination services. There is a new Gynaecology Day Assessment unit providing service over 5 days during the week. The postholder will be asked to participate in general gynaecology clinics, fast track and Gynae-Oncology theatre sessions and help develop the service.
