Job overview

The post holder will work on the ward supporting the busy RIU team and will also be attending outpatients' clinic and endoscopy.Flexibility will be required to meet the needs of the service. Duties will include responsibility for in-patient ward rounds out-patient clinics and endoscopy lists.

THE INTESTINAL REHABILITATION UNIT

St Mark's Hospital was one of the first in the world to develop expertise in intravenous nutrition. The Lennard-Jones Intestinal Failure Unit opened back in 1998 is one of only two in the United Kingdom to have national recognition for the treatment of severe intestinal failure. Operating from a maximum bed base of 21 the Unit receives over 100 new referrals a year, performs on average 50 IF surgery cases per year and manages 330 patients on home parenteral nutrition. This is the largest number cared for in any hospital in the UK and represents approximately 20% of the HPN population in the UK.

This post is largely the continuation of the post occupied by Dr Simon Gabe with a predominant responsibility for intestinal failure and complex GI disease. Tertiary referrals are expected and can either be seen in outpatients or will be transferred and seen as inpatients.

Duties will include:

  • A rotating responsibility with Drs Gabe and Holman to cover the IRU, outlier patients, general gastroenterology clinic and nutrition clinic
  • 2 endoscopy sessions
  • an on-call commitment for gastroenterology (incorporating GI bleeding)
  • a minimal commitment to on-call or general medicine
  • There is a requirement for a commitment to post graduate and undergraduate teaching and the appointee will be encouraged to carry out research.

Job responsibilities

The appointee will be part of the acute gastroenterology on-call rota (out of hours support to the on call endoscopy registrar, plus ward rounds at weekends and review of unwell current inpatients with gastroenterological conditions). The appointee will also be required to cover two weekends a year on the general medical on-call rota.

  • IT Skills and computer literacy
  • Broad based training in Gastroenterology and its subspecialties

  • NHS experience within the last 3 years
  • Skilled in endoscopy

Management and Audit

  • Understanding the principles of clinical governance and its implications
  • Leadership skills

  • Management qualification or current study towards management qualification.
  • Evidence of service audit, design or change management.
