Job Details

A fantastic opportunity has arisen due to the expansion of the Theatres and Anaesthetics department at the Trust. The investment is one of a wider suite of investments, including:

  • £3m investment to refurbish the West Wing Theatre Suite, due for completion in early 2025.
  • £687k investment in 31 AISYS CS2 Anaesthetic Machines
  • £300k investment in 28 BeneVision N17 Monitors
  • A new Simulation Suite as part of a £36m investment
  • A state of the art 18-bedded Critical Care Unit

We have also put in place a benefit package, including:

  • Expenses Policy with reimbursement up to £8k.
  • Funding for four courses on the RCoA's Diary of Courses and Events accredited for CPD during the first two years of employment.
  • An increase in education costs from £800 to £5,000 per year in their first two years of employment to support embedding their clinical practice within the NHS and improving their knowledge & skills
  • Payment for Royal College of Anaesthesia registration for the first two years of employment, at a total cost of £1k
  • Funding of up to £10k to support the completion of a MBA (University of Birmingham), MSc in Healthcare Leadership (University of Birmingham) or NHS Leadership Academy Programmes (e.g. Edward Jenner, Elizabeth Garrett Anderson, Aneurin Bevin)

NB: For any of the aforementioned benefits, if you leave the Trust before completion of 12 months' service you repay 100% and if you leave the Trust before completion of 24 months' service you repay 50%

Main duties of the job

The post-holders will work in collaboration with the existing Anaesthetists to provide a high quality, progressive and professional Anaesthetic service in a broad range of surgical specialties.

This post is for a standard 10 Programmed Activities (PA) with negotiable additional PAs up to 2PAs.

The appointee must be able to demonstrate experience in broad range of Anaesthetic specialities including good experience in obstetrics and paediatric anaesthesia.

There are opportunities to develop special interests in Anaesthetic Simulation, Bariatric Anaesthesia, Pre Assessments, ENT/Airway, Paediatrics, Perioperative Medicine and Regional Anaesthesia.

Job description
Job responsibilities

The working week is comprised of 10 Programmed Activities (PAs), a further 2 Additional PAs is negotiable, with each PA having a nominal timetable value of 4 hours. This will comprise of 8.5 PAs on Direct Clinical Care with 1.5 PAs on Supporting Professional Activities (SPAs). A job plan and work schedule will set out agreed arrangements for how work is organised, where it is located, what in general terms the work comprises and when it is to be performed.

For this post direct clinical care (DCC) (work relating directly to the prevention, diagnosis or treatment of illness) includes theatre work, pre and post-operative visiting, emergency work, outpatient pre-assessment activities, and administration directly related to the above, day time and out of hours.

Supporting professional activities (SPA) (that underpin direct clinical care) include participation in training, medical education, continuous professional development, formal teaching, audit, clinical management and local clinical governance activities.

QUALIFICATIONS
Essential

  • Primary medical degree registrable in UK
  • To be on the GMC's Specialist Register (or entry expected within 6 months from the date of interview)
  • Relevant CCT or equivalent (Equivalence must be confirmed by PMETB/GMC by date of interview)
  • FRCA or equivalent
  • Experience of working in an NHS hospital
  • Full GMC Registration and licensable

EXPERIENCE
Essential

  • Wide experience in all aspects of Anaesthesia
  • Experience in Bariatric and/or Preassessment

Research, Innovation and Service Improvement Experience
Essential

  • Evidence of research experience and published work
  • Ability to teach clinical skills to medical staff/students and other disciplines
  • An understanding of the current NHS environment, particularly in relation to reforms, initiatives and issues.

Clinical Effectiveness
Essential

  • Experience of conducting clinical audit
  • Ability to use the evidence base and clinical audit to support decision-making

Other Requirements
Essential

  • Able to communicate in written and spoken English
  • Residence within 30 minutes travelling time of Manor hospital and be able to fulfil the requirements of the post
