A fantastic opportunity has arisen to join Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust due to the expansion in urgent & emergency care services at the Trust. As a result of a widening catchment area of patients attending Walsall Manor Emergency Department in recent years and following the opening of Midland Metropolitan University Hospital, Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust are seeking staff to continue to support the Trust's journey to be a leading provider of care for our community.

We are looking for driven and ambitious Consultants to join Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust in the department of Emergency Medicine, who hold FRCEM or CESR.

The Emergency Medicine Consultant is the pivot of the department offering both clinical and team leadership. Working as part of team of Higher Specialty trainees, Middle Grades, ACPs, ENPs, Junior Doctors: GPVTS, FY2s, FY1s and a skilled nursing team.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work 10 basic, plus 1 additional Programmed Activity per week. Participation in a 1:8 Consultant on-call rota during the weekend and a 1:8 Consultant on-call rota during weekdays for the Emergency Department is included in the 11PAs.

Job description
Job responsibilities

Key duties of the post

  • Definitive care of patient attendances
  • Immediate resuscitation of critically ill patients and thereafter referral to the appropriate department of those patients who require admission.
  • Communication and liaison with other departments within the hospital, both clinical and managerial.
  • Communication and liaison with agencies outside the hospital including the emergency services, GP Surgeries and Urgent Care Centres, tertiary trauma centre.
  • Responsibility for the supervision, training and education of junior Medical staff, with an active role in the training of nursing and other staff.
  • The post holder may be named as the educational supervisor of a number of junior medical staff and supervising the ACPs.
  • Dealing with personnel and other managerial issues.
  • Continuing development of the service, using audit, the application of evidence-based medicine, support development of IT infrastructure, mentorship programme and streaming pathway.
  • Support a culture of learning from excellence as well as learning from mistakes/errors.

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential

  • Basic Medical Degree (eg MBBS or equivalent)
  • FRCEM or CESR (or equivalent)
  • Completion of Higher Specialist Training (or equivalent) in Emergency Medicine
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview) CESR or European Community Rights Relevant CCT or equivalent (equivalent must be confirmed by PMETB/GMC by date of interview
  • Post-graduate qualification eg MRCEM/FRCEM/MRCP/FRCS or equivalent

Professional Registration
Essential

  • GMC registration with a Licence to Practice

Training & Clinical Experience
Essential

  • Wide experience in specialties relevant to Emergency Medicine (adults and children)
  • Possession of ALS, ATLS and APLS provider
  • Evidence of completion of a recognised training programme leading to FCEM (or CESR)
  • Experience of teaching and training

Desirable

  • ALS/ATLS/APLS Instructor
  • Complimentary special interests

  • Experience of conducting clinical audit

  • Ability to teach clinical skills to medical staff/students and other disciplines
