Job Details

Applications are invited for Locum Consultant Physicians in Acute Medicine to work across the University Hospital of Wales and University Hospital Llandough sites in Cardiff.

The hospitals, which are some of the largest in the UK, provide a full range of secondary care services to the local population and provide tertiary care facilities for the region and wider afield across Wales.

These appointments represent a significant investment by the UHB into transforming Acute Medicine and provides an exciting opportunity for appointees to broaden the existing sub-specialty mix in acute medicine of stroke, diabetes & endocrinology, gastroenterology, neurology, respiratory medicine, cardiology, pharmacology, and renal medicine. Acute Physicians play a central role in developing and improving pathways as well as clinical outcomes for medical patients in the Unscheduled Care stream and in-patients within the hospital.

Applicants must ensure they provide names and contact details of referees covering at least the last 3 years of their employment/training history in full. In addition, applicants who are currently or have most recently been employed as a substantive Consultant or as a Locum Consultant in post for more than 12 months must also provide the name of their Medical Director as an additional referee.

Main duties of the job

Post holders will work a varied job plan which will include clinical sessions in the Emergency Department / Assessment Unit, Same Day Emergency Care Unit, Virtual ward, and Short Stay Units. On-call frequency is currently one evening per month followed by an early morning shift every 17 days followed by one evening session including on-call from home after 10pm after another 17 days. This arrangement may change as acute medical services develop.

There may also be opportunity for sessions in another specialty of choice if desired and suitably trained, further strengthening the close relationship between acute medicine and other medical specialties.

It is anticipated that post holders will increasingly drive new ways of working with colleagues in the Emergency Unit, Primary Care, and in-patient specialties.

Cardiff and Vale University Health Board is recognised as a teaching centre of excellence in a wide range of clinical services.

Applicants should preferably either be on the Specialist Register or be a Specialist Registrar within three months of their expected date of receipt of a CCT / CESR(CP) at the time of interview.

You will be able to take advantage of the excellent Consultant contract for Wales. The basic salary for this post is £105,401 per annum. (National pay rise pending)

Although these posts are full-time, consideration will be given to applicants who require flexible working arrangements.
