Purpose of the Role:
This appointment will place the existing service on a robust footing, protecting continuity of service and a reduction in the current 1:3 call rota (1:4 when the fourth appointment is in place). While paediatric pathology is itself a sub-specialty, this appointment will facilitate the development of specialty interests and expertise, allowing the appointees to identify trends in particular critical areas where additional designated and protected time might improve the service available to the hospital and the country. An obvious example is molecular testing. Many other services in CHI have found that additional appointments have led to the development of subject leads within departments, allowing a designated individual to attend subject specific conferences, develop networks and provide departmental direction in particular areas. Examples include oncology where each of the appointed consultants leads on one or more of the tumour types (eg. CNS tumours, Hodgkin’s, soft tissue sarcomas etc). A similar scenario in histopathology is feasible with this appointment.
