Job Details
We have an exciting opportunity to join the Ophthalmology Team at The Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust as a fellow in our Oculoplastics team. LTHT Eye Department is the largest provider of specialist hospital Ophthalmology Services in the Yorkshire Region.
Applications are welcomed for this post, which could be held as either full time or part time. This position would suit a senior higher surgical trainee or post-CCT doctor who has to demonstrable interest in Oculoplastic.
The post is available for an immediate start and will be for a maximum of 6 months. The post will mainly involve outpatient clinics but there may be some surgical opportunities as well.
Candidates must be fully registered with the General Medical Council and hold a license to practice at the time of appointment.
Main duties of the job
To deliver a wide range of Ophthalmology care and sub speciality care for cases, at the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.
Out-patient clinics
Supervision of patients
Contribute to Specialist Multi-disciplinary team meetings
Ensure provision of a high standard of care to patients in operating theatre, inpatients, day cases and outpatients for both acute and elective conditions
Referrals to other specialists, departments and hospitals are timely and appropriate
To link with Consultant colleagues in other relevant site specialist teams within the Trust
To contribute to research, teaching and new developments within the Ophthalmology department. The post holder will be encouraged to facilitate and contribute to the current clinical research programs on going in the department.
In addition to the clinical skills, the post holder will be actively involved in research and publication.
The post holder will also be expected to develop a deeper understanding of management issues within Teaching Hospital Departments and the wider Trust.
About us
The Eye Department is based at St James University Hospital, Leeds. There are 29 consultants in the wider Ophthalmology Department. The team also trains Ophthalmic specialist trainees from the region. We have recently moved into a new outpatient department which has provided us which much more space for patients and clinicians. The Ophthalmology department provides a comprehensive range of secondary and tertiary eye (ophthalmic) services for adults and children in Leeds and a tertiary eye service for other areas of Yorkshire and beyond.

INFORMATION ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
The Eye Department in Leeds, which is based at St James University Hospital (SJUH), is looking for an oculoplastic ophthalmology fellow to work for 6 months at SJUH. The post holder will be working with Professor Chang and 3 other consultants with special interest in Oculoplastic surgery.

The team also trains Ophthalmic specialist trainees from the region.
DUTIES OF THE POST
To deliver a wide range of Ophthalmology care and sub speciality care for adult patients, at the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.
Ensure provision of a high standard of care to patients in operating theatre, inpatients, day cases and outpatients for both acute and elective conditions
Accept and manage referrals from other specialists, departments and hospitals in a timely and appropriate manner

Contribute to departmental meetings
Contribute to quality improvement, research, teaching and new developments within the Ophthalmology department.
The post holder will spend 6 months working in the Ophthalmology Department in SJUH.
The post holder may be expected to cover on-call duties and also see ad-hoc casualty and general ophthalmology patients.
The objectives for the year would be to further train the post holder in Oculoplastic ophthalmology.
By the end of the 6 months, the post holder would be expected to be confident in the management of Oculoplastic conditions.
The post holder will also be expected to develop a deeper understanding of management issues within Teaching Hospital Departments and the wider Trust.
LEVELS OF RESPONSIBILITY
The post-holder will be carefully supported throughout the first month of the tenure but will be expected to develop more autonomous working patterns as experience grows. The post-holder will be working at the level of a post CCT ophthalmologist/trust grade DR.
TEACHING AND RESEARCH/STUDY AND TRAINING
The post holder will be encouraged to contribute to the active research portfolio of the department. Previous post-holders have published in ophthalmic and VR literature and have presented at national and international ophthalmology meetings.

Qualifications
Essential
- FRCOphth or equivalent qualification
- Be eligible for full registration with, and hold a current licence to practise from, the GMC at the time of appointment.
- Eligibility to work in the UK.
- Advanced Life Support Certificate from the Resuscitation Council UK or equivalent (as required to complete Foundation competences) by intended start date
- Is up to date and fit to practise safely and is aware of own training needs.
Experience

- Completed at least 4 years of a higher surgical training in ophthalmology
