This is a 5th permanent Consultant Neurologist post for the Neurology service in the Southern Health and Social Care Trust.

 

 

 

SUMMARY OF POST

 

  • There is no on-call associated with this post. This post will attract a salary of £94,127 - £126,907 per annum. This is a full-time position, however anyone interested in working part-time / job share is also welcome to apply. Annual leave will be 32 days per annum initially rising to 34 days after 7 years’ seniority, plus 10 statutory and public holidays. The post also has an attractive study leave entitlement of up to 30 days paid leave with expenses in any period of three years.  A relocation package may also be available if required. The Southern Trust has established a dedicated revalidation support team which ensures all doctors have an annual appraisal with a trained appraiser and supports all doctors through the revalidation process. The Trust has also appointed corporate, Consultant Leads for appraisal and revalidation. The Trust supports the requirements for continuing professional development (CPD) as laid down by the GMC and is committed to providing time and financial support for these activities. The post will attract all the terms and conditions and employment benefits associated with an NHS post e.g. NHS indemnity; access to NHS pension scheme and many additional benefits such as child care vouchers etc WORK OF THE DEPARTMENT

     

    This is a full-time post based at Craigavon Area Hospital.  Outpatient clinics will be carried out at the Neurology Centre in Craigavon Area Hospital (depending on job planning discussion, clinics may be offered at Daisy Hill Hospital, Banbridge Polyclinic or South Tyrone Hospital).  One programmed activity per week is allocated for continuing medical education which will include attendance in person or remotely at the Regional Neuroscience Meeting with other clinical neuroscience staff from Belfast HSC Trust and other HSC Trusts.  The post holder will support the Trust-wide neurology liaison service. This 5th post will enable the SHSCT Neurology team to provide two day per week onsite consultant cover to Daisy Hill and the post holder will have the option to be based in Daisy Hill Hospital or Craigavon Area Hospital for ward cover work.  The post holder will assist in the provision of a Virtual Clinic to triage referrals to neurology.  There is no on-call commitment at present.  For substantive post holders, a subspecialty clinic to complement the needs of the service would be welcomed and accommodated.

     

     

     

    Neurology services in Northern Ireland are being reviewed by The Health and Social Care Board to improve equity of access regardless of where a patient lives. This includes access to a sub-specialist neurology opinion that may not be readily available in a patient’s local Trust, and the testing of novel clinical models to improve patient access to neurology from Unscheduled Care Services. Opportunities to use Information Technology to improve communication with primary care may also emerge in the near future. Consultants based at a particular location may be required to provide sub-specialty services at another location outside their main employing Trust’s area, and may be approached to implement services based on new technologies. Your job plan may need revised, in discussion with you and your employing Trust to ensure successful implementation of any new arrangements.

     

     

     

    The Neurology service in the Southern Trust prides itself in service development.  Innovative ideas to improve care will be encouraged.  The Southern HSC Trust is the only site for the MND SMART trial and participation in clinical trials or funded research opportunities will be encouraged.  The Neurology team also participate in undergraduate medical student teaching for QUB and are starting to host postgraduate medical students from the University of Ulster (from 2023 onwards).  Engagement with teaching in clinics or while doing ward cover is encouraged.

     

    DUTIES OF THE POST:

     

    Clinical

    The post holder will undertake the following clinical duties.

     

     

     

    The assessment and treatment of outpatients referred to the Neurology Service The provision of a liaison neurology service to the SHSCT. The provision of a virtual clinic to offer advice to General Practitioners using the Clinical Communications Gateway and triage of referrals to the SHSCT Neurology Service using the NIECR based e-triage. Collaborative management of in-patients in Southern Trust Hospitals and supervision of junior medical staff in their duties.  The appointee may contribute to informal teaching on ward rounds. If they subsequently take on regular teaching or clinical supervisory commitments these will be job-planned and allocated appropriate SPA time. Out-of-hours holidays, statutory leave, study leave and cover is provided by arrangement with the Clinical Director.
