An exciting locum consultant medical oncologist, This post is for 10 Programmed Activities per week to work within Acute oncology and Lung Cancer.

The applicant will deliver 5 pa's Acute oncology care to inpatients on the Acute Assessment Unit. The Trust provides an inpatient service for selected non-elective admissions where the reason for admission is primarily related to the patient's underlying malignant diagnosis or its treatment. All admissions are already in receipt of oncology care at the Trust. 5 pa's are also offered to support Lung Cancer supporting the outpatient clinics and ward rounds on a weekly basis.

The successful applicant will review all non-surgical admissions, and lead a multidisciplinary ward round reviewing inpatients on the AAU and Lung patients throughout the Trust.

Main duties of the job

You will be supporting the Trust to provide an inpatient service for selected non-elective admissions where the reason for admission is primarily related to the patient's underlying malignant diagnosis or its treatment. All admissions are already in receipt of oncology care at the Trust. The normal route of admission is via our 24hr hotline which triages patients and diverts patients to their Acute Trust A& E if appropriate (e.g. chest pain and acute abdominal pain).

The role of the consultant is to provide leadership and co-ordination of the junior doctors on Acute Assessment Unit, liaise with the patient's oncology team, ensure the patients are appropriately assessed and managed regarding their in-patient episode, progressed without delay on their management plan and appropriately prepared for discharge to avoid unnecessary delay. The consultant will provide daily ward rounds on AAU with attendance and contributions from the multi-disciplinary team and direct reviews as required and within the time available. Another key role of this post is to provide junior doctor supervision, education and support for their inpatient work. The Lung Consultant role will be to deliver outpatient clinics at the main Chrisitie site and may also require peripheral site cover as and when required, this is not currently factored into the current proposed job plan.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The appointee will be based at The Christie and will provide services both at the Withington site as well as at Wythenshawe Hospital, which is part of Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust. They will provide senior input to the following areas of delivery:

Outpatient clinics at The Christie and Wythenshawe Hospital.

Chemotherapy Services Oak Road Treatment Centre, Christie @ Home, Outreach, Cecilia Centre (Wythenshawe)

Inpatient Services - primarily Wards and the Oncology Assessment Unit and on the Pulmonary Oncology Ward at Wythenshawe

Multi-Disciplinary Team meetings

The role will be responsible for:

Management of patients with Lung Cancer receiving standard therapy and in phase II/III trials including treatment decisions and ongoing care.

Participating in all relevant aspects of clinical governance, including maintaining up to date protocols, guidelines and clinical audit, under the supervision of the other consultants in the unit.

Contribute to current research projects and establish new opportunities to expand and develop research within the team.

Revision and development of evidence-based protocols for patients and undertaking the administrative duties associated with the care of their patients.

Maintaining a level of continuing professional development consistent with the recommendations of the Royal College of Physicians.

Contributing to the undergraduate teaching of medical students on oncology topics.

Providing lectures for the busy postgraduate teaching programme.

Actively contributing to the training of junior doctors and other multi-disciplinary team members in both in-patient and outpatient departments including acting as clinical supervisor.

Undertake clinical audit as a member of The Christie Medical Staff Committee.

The post holder will have access to office accommodation with computer, internet and secretarial support.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

The Trust supports the requirements for continuing professional development (CPD) as laid down by the GMC and surgical colleges and is committed to providing time and financial support for these activities. The Christie Hospital offers a mentoring scheme for all new consultants on appointment.

Job Planning

The job plan outlines the requirements of the post and may be altered by joint agreement with the Divisional Clinical Director and Service Manager and in response to service needs. Job Plans are also subject to an annual review (May September) as detailed in the Trusts Job Planning Policy. It is expected that the initial Job Plan discussion will take place within the first six months of employment at the Trust.

The annual review will examine all aspects of the job plan (including any Educational components) and will also include an assessment of professional development with defined goals for the future.

It is the requirement of the Trust that all new consultant colleagues must have 0.25 SPAs within their job plan to support Trust appraisal and supervision requirements. This can either be as appraiser or a supervisor for medical staff or Advanced clinical Practitioners.
