Job Details

Following significant investment into Community Child Health Services in Herefordshire our consultant team is expanding. We are particularly keen to recruit a colleague with an Interest in Autism and Neurodevelopment. Within our service expansion plan there is however scope for the team to be flexible and welcome all areas of subspeciality interest to complement the team- including for example Audiology, Safeguarding and Children Looked After.

There is potential to take on allied leadership roles according to individual interest and experience. If you are applying for your first consultant post we would offer supervision and encourage additional training for your professional development to support you in establishing an area of subspeciality interest.

This is a full time post , with no on-call commitment our team is based at the Child Development Centre in Hereford. We would welcome applications from those wishing to work less than full time, or job share. A condensed working

Main duties of the job

The post holder joining the Neurodevelopmental team or ASD assessment team will undertake clinics and if further assessment is indicated, lead multidisciplinary completion of ASD assessments.

The post holder joining the Children Looked After team will in addition to the clinical commitments undertaking Statutory Health Assessments/ Adoption reports, etc. they will be willing to chair meetings, offer clinical advice and develop a leadership role. According to experience and interest, they will be encouraged to fulfil the responsibilities of either the Medical Advisor for adoption and fostering, or the Named Doctor for CLA. They will undertake audit and contribute to service evaluation for reporting and service development.

Have experience and understanding of multidisciplinary & multiagency working in order to best assess and plan how to meet the needs of children on our caseload. They will liaise with other professionals through offering written reports, case discussion or clinical meetings as appropriate.

Equal admin to clinical time is allocated, e.g. a four hour clinic will have four hours of admin timetabled

SPA allocation of 1.5 PA per week with possibility of additional time, up to 2.5 PA, for specific responsibilities

One flexible session per week to cover as required:

  • Multi-agency meetings (team around the Child child protection conferences, Adoption breakdown etc.)
  • Nursery and school visits
  • Multidisciplinary meetings for children with complex needs

Person Specification
Professional Qualifications
Essential

  • Full registration with the General Medical Council
  • MRCPCH or equivalent
  • Entry on Specialist Register in Community Paediatrics via CCT or CESR, Or within six months of obtaining Specialist Registration (at the date of interview), or obtaining CESR

Desirable

  • Higher degree e.g. MSc, MD or other higher degree
  • DCH, DCCH, or other relevant diplomas

Clinical experience, knowledge and skills
Essential

  • Wide experience, knowledge and skills in Paediatrics.
  • Knowledge of child protection and experience in managing child abuse and neglect.
  • Level 3 or higher formal training in Child Protection
  • Usually, at least 2 years General Professional Training in paediatrics
  • Usually 5 years Higher Specialist Training in Paediatrics.
  • Knowledge of Statutory Framework for Looked After Children (CLA Post)
  • Knowledge and experience undertaking Neurodevelopmental Assessments including Autism.
  • IT skills and competency to work within health digital systems.
  • Completed Basic life Support Course

Desirable

  • Experience or training in one or more of the following areas child mental health, Looked After Children services, EHCP, ASD
  • Experience working in Community Paediatrics
  • Interest in or experience of Medical Advisor /Named Doctor roles for Children In Care. (CLA post only)

Management
Essential

  • Knowledge of the role of clinical governance in current clinical practice
  • Understanding of clinical risk management
  • Ability to mentor staff
  • Understanding of management issues including medical management clinical governance, service planning and quality improvement. Willingness to lead service developments

Desirable

  • An understanding of NHS management responsibilities of Consultants.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage e.g. project work mentoring junior staff
  • Demonstrated ability to take on a leadership role

Teaching, audit and research
Essential

  • Experience of Teaching Students, medical and other staff in a variety of settings
  • Demonstration of participation in audit and understanding of the audit process
  • Demonstration of willingness to participate in research.

Desirable

  • Interest in and commitment to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
  • Attendance at a 'training the trainers' or similar course
  • Demonstrate ability to design and complete an audit project
  • Demonstrate ability to design and complete a research project.

Professional Interests
Essential

  • Understanding of the Special Educational Needs and Disability Framework Understanding of health needs and Statutory Framework for Looked After Children or Understanding of Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Desirable

  • Membership of appropriate professional societies, i.e. BACCH, BACD, BAAF, etc

Personal Skills
Essential

  • Reliability and good personal organisational skills with a flexible attitude and ability to recognise own limitations
  • Ability to work within multidisciplinary and multi-agency teams
  • Ability to communicate and liaise effectively with children, their parents and with colleagues. Good written communication skills.
