This is a post for a Substantive Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology with a special interest in Gynaecology Oncology and skills in Laparoscopic surgery. The post holder will be based at Wexham Park Hospital and will work closely with another colleague on site with the same special interest and with the Tertiary cancer centre at Hammersmith Hospital.

Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust (FHFT) has 2 acute hospital sites, Wexham Park Hospital (WPH) and Frimley Park Hospital (FPH), both with busy Maternity Units and Emergency Departments and a range of other services. In addition, a new state of the art pure elective unit (Heatherwood Hospital) was opened in 2022. FHFT serves a population of nearly 900,000 and is the only acute Trust is its ICS which is Frimley Health ICS.

The post holder will undertake their on-call and Obstetric commitments at Wexham Park Hospital. It is anticipated that the post holder will undertake their outpatient clinics and inpatient surgical operating sessions at both WPH and Heatherwood Hospitals. The Trust gained full GIRFT accreditation in 2023.

Wexham Park Hospital (WPH) has a dedicated Gynaecology/Early Pregnancy SDEC area which is open 8am to 8pm seven days a week which the post holder will have opportunity to work in.

Main duties of the job

The allocation of programmed activities will be based on 8.5 for direct clinical care and up to 1.5 for supporting professional activities.

The proposed timetable, each week, which has some degree of flexibility will include:

Rapid Access Clinic 1.0 PA

Colposcopy and Vulval Clinics 0,5 PA Hysteroscopy (alternate weeks) 0.5 PA

Gynae Theatre list 1.0 PA

ANC 1.0PA

SDEC twilight session 0.5 PA

MDT 0.25 PA

Post MDT clinic (virtual and face to face ) 0.5 PA

Triage/PTL/admin 0.5 PA

Out of hours (including resident Consultant night 1.3/month) 2.8 PA

SPA 1.5 PA

Job responsibilities

Direct Clinical Care This includes work directly relating to the prevention, diagnosis or treatment of illness. This includes emergency duties, operating sessions, ward rounds, outpatient activities, clinical diagnostic work, other patient treatment, MDTs about direct patient care and administration directly related to the above. Special Interest Outpatient clinics take place at both Heatherwood Hospital (new build state of the art facility opened in 2022) and at the Wexham Park site. Heatherwood Hospital has been given full GIRFT accreditation in 2023. The post holder will be supported by Clinical Nurse Specialists in Gynaecology Oncology (3 part-time posts) and the Lead Consultant for Gynaecology Oncology Miss Sumita Nayak. The tertiary centre for Gynaecology Oncology is Hammersmith Hospital

Supporting Professional Activities These are activities that underpin Direct clinical care. This may include participation in training, medical education, CPD, formal teaching, audit, job planning, appraisal, research, clinical management and local governance activities. It was a contractual requirement that SPA activities are carried out on site but since the Covid-19 pandemic home working has been supported for SPA.

  • Experience Essential criteria Maximum score 24 Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a range of problems both emergency and elective within Obstetrics & Gynaecology Ability to work with clinicians from medical specialties and in other organisations Clinical training and experience equivalent to that for gaining UK CCT in Obstetrics and Gynaecology Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients Ability to work with Labour Ward MDT and formulate Obstetric guidelines Ability to advise on efficient and smooth running of specialist service Ability to manage and lead a firm Direct experience of audit To demonstrate innovative thinking in delivery and management of an obstetrics and gynaecology service Experience of teaching clinical skills to undergraduates and postgraduates, in Obstetrics & Gynaecology to trainee specialists. Able to facilitate teaching in high risk obstetrics and intrapartum care to doctors, midwives and allied healthcare professionals. Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical and surgical problems
