Applications are invited for the post of Locum Consultant in Paediatric Dentistry within the Paediatric Dental Department at Barts Health Trust in London. This will be mainly based within the state-of-the-art Dental Hospital at the Royal London Hospital site with some clinics and theatre sessions on the Trust Day Stay Wards and local outreach clinics.

The successful candidate will be required to provide care for children referred in for secondary and tertiary care, including those with medical conditions, genetic dental anomalies of tooth structure, impacted teeth and trauma. They will help oversee the dental trauma clinic and provide input into multidisciplinary clinics. The post holder will be expected to participate in professional dental responsibilities and training of the junior staff as well as postgraduate, undergraduate and therapy students.

Strong leadership and management skills will be required in addition to good communication and organisational abilities.

Main duties of the job

o To be an active member of the Surgical division and help deliver the departmental mission of excellence in clinical care and teaching.

o Continuing responsibility for providing a specialist paediatric dental service for the patients referred to the department in line with Trust and Department of Health targets, including performing all administrative duties associated with patient care.

o Leadership, development and organisation of the services in charge of the post holder in line with the Trust's business plans. Liaison and communication with the Clinical Director, the Lead Clinician and the General/Service Manager

Qualifications
Essential

  • Full registration (or eligible for) with the United Kingdom General Dental Council (GDC)
  • On (or eligible for) the GDC Specialist List in Paediatric Dentistry
  • Intercollegiate Specialty Fellowship Exit Examination in Paediatric Dentistry or equivalent

Desirable

  • Fellowship in Dental Surgery or Membership of the Faculty Dental Surgery (of one of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons of the UK or Ireland), or equivalent

Experience
Essential

  • Completion of a 3 year CCST training in Paediatric Dentistry (or equivalent) plus 2 year approved post CCST Fixed Term Training (FTTA) or equivalent or within 6 months of completion

Desirable

  • Consultant level experience of paediatric dental trauma, hypodontia and children with cleft palate

Teaching
Essential

  • Experience of post graduate and undergraduate teaching and training at an appropriate level

Audit

  • Effective participation in audit

Research

  • Ability to appraise scientific literature critically
