This is fantastic opportunity to be involved in one of the busiest major trauma centres in the country. This is a substantive consultant 5 PA post and the appointee will join a current body of thirteen substantive and three locum Consultants within the Plastic Surgery Department. We have a well-established plastic surgery unit which serves numerous spokes from the main base at the Royal London Hospital.

This post will incorporate elements of general plastic surgery, with a focus on burns and scar management. We have a well-established plastic surgery unit which serves numerous spokes from the main base at the Royal London Hospital. The post will work across three of the Barts Health sites. The Royal London Hospital is the primary location with regular clinics and operating.

Experience working within an MTC environment and trauma microsurgery will be essential as the role is also on the on-call for plastic surgery. The new appointee will be expected to function as an integral member of the trauma multi-disciplinary team based at Royal London with contribution to both lower limb and upper limb trauma out of hours.

Main duties of the job

General Duties

1. Continuing responsibility for the care of patients in their charge, including all administrative duties associated with patient care.

2. Leadership, development, and organization of the services in their charge in line with the Trusts' Business Plans. Liaison and communication with the Lead Clinician for the Directorate, the General Manager, and other members of the team.

3. Development of their own interests within the specialty, including expansion of the breast reconstruction service, development of innovation and research participation.

4. Corporate and individual responsibility for the professional management of doctors in training including training and education, supervision, and mentorship.

Duties of the post

1. To contribute to the provision of a comprehensive and efficient surgical service.

2. To provide evidence-based care for all inpatients and outpatients.

3. To always have regard to the clinical and quality standards set out in the NHS plan and local purchaser contracts.

4. To participate in the plastic surgery on call rota for the Trust, in the first instance this will be the Royal London.

5. The post holder may be required to carry out other duties in emergencies and unforeseen circumstances. There is also a requirement to cover on-call in circumstances of unexpected leave and sick leave.

Qualifications/ Higher Degree
Essential

  • MBBS or equivalent
  • FRCS(Plast) or equivalent
  • CCT (or within 3 months from date or interview or on specialist register

Desirable

  • Higher Degree MD/MS/PhD/MPhil

Clinical Expertise in Special- ty/Sub- Specialty
Essential

  • Broad exposure to Plastic and Reconstructive surgery with recent UK experience and familiarity with UK hospitals
  • Fellowship in microsurgery
  • Experience of dealing with complex trauma including lower limb and hand replants and other microsurgical trauma reconstruction
  • Experience in diagnosis and treatment of complex reconstruction conditions

Desirable

  • Extensive experience in trauma re- construction including microsurgery
  • Multiple fellowships in microsurgery

Further training, teaching, management, and audit
Essential

  • Evidence of recent relevant recent training demonstrating commitment to CPD
  • Experience teaching and coaching junior team members in plastic surgery and trauma management.
  • Relevant full cycle audit or improvement experience
  • Understanding of governance

Desirable

  • Experience as a trainer in areas related to plastic surgery.
  • Governance experience Leadership roles
