To provide, in conjunction with other colleagues, comprehensive ortho-geriatric cover for Trauma and Orthopaedic patients according to NICE, NHFD and BOA guideless on hip and femoral/fragility fractures.

Main duties of the job


Ours is busy and dynamic trauma unit with 12 Orthopaedic Consultants, 13 middle grades, 8 FY2 doctors and 4 ACP/trainees.

We admit over 600 patients with hip, femur and other fragility fractures to our trauma ward (Maple D/B) at The Cumberland Infirmary. Our Trauma Ward has 40 beds with capacity to escalate into a further 4 beds, when needed.

Our Ortho-geriatric team has been designed to mirror the standard of the elderly care service in West and North East Cumbria has been designed to dovetail with the overall Trust vision and consists of three main strategic aims:-

1) Provide early Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment for frail elderly people (7 days a week) as per the `Silver Book' and RCP standards by contributing to `interface geriatrics' and a short stay frail elderly assessment unit.

2) Ensure specialist geriatric input to orthopaedic patients as recommended by the British Orthopaedic Association standards, NHFD BPT guidelines and NCEPOD reports.

The Ortho-geriatric service has dedicated nursing, therapy and social work staff together with support from an Advanced Nurse Practitioner and 8 Junior Doctors.

Senior clinical colleagues will provide mentorship to the post holder.

Opportunities for audit and research are available and will be encouraged.

At present there are no out of hours/on call/weekend work.

Key Responsibilities

  • To establish, along with a consultant orthogeriatrician, a full time Ortho-Geriatric service at The Cumberland Infirmary
  • To provide a safer orthopaedic and trauma service with geriatric support
  • To meet national requirements and adhere to NICE/BOA/NHFD guidelines
  • To help support and mentor our junior workforce
  • To support bed pressures, perioperative care and patient experience
  • To reduce theatre delays, morbidity and mortality for hip and femur fracture patients and improve their post-operative outcomes
  • To support the reduction in length of stay in hospital
  • To change the culture of just treating the hip/femur/fragility fracture to making provision for personalised and holistic care packages for these frail elderly population.
  • To support the current work to re-establish FY1 and FY2 HENE trainees

Person Specification

  • Full GMC registration
  • MBBS or equivalent


  • At least six months experience working in the UK as a doctor
