Job Details

This is a first tier level post at the equivalent of ST1 - ST2 level. The post holder will work with other first tier Paediatricians to provide continuous emergency cover for the Delivery Suite and the Level Two Neonatal Unit, Emergency Department and the 35 bedded Childrens Ward.

This post is suitable for a doctor who is keen to develop their knowledge and experience in paediatrics, particularly those interested in pursuing a career in paediatrics. This post has a 1 in 8 on call rota at first tier level.

Previous experience in paediatrics is desirable but not essential.

This is a fixed term Post for 12 months for 1 Clinical Fellow role.

Main duties of the job

  • Applications are invited for an ST1-2-level training post offered by the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, based at the Worcestershire Royal Hospital. This post is for a fixed term of 12 months to fill gaps in the paediatric establishment.
  • The successful candidate will be well supported in gaining experience on Riverbank (Childrens) Ward, the Paediatric Assessment Pathway, the Neonatal Unit, Postnatal Ward and in Childrens Clinic. The posts also include participation in the on-call rota and/or ward cover in the evenings and at weekends.
  • The successful candidate will be welcomed to join the weekly teaching sessions. In-house training will be provided and study leave will be available to help candidates prepare for examinations.
  • Duties of the posts include care of Children and Young People on Riverbank Ward and the Paediatric Assessment Pathway, attendance at deliveries and care of neonates on the Neonatal Unit and Postnatal Ward. Participation in audit and research is encouraged. Training will be supervised by a named consultant.
  • Completion of the post should help prepare the candidate for further specialist training in the UK or abroad.

Job responsibilities


This post is designed to offer experience and training to doctors who wish to work towards the MRCPCH qualification, and to pursue further training in Paediatrics in the UK. Working as a Junior Clinical Fellow (ST1-2 grade) in this Trust will combine exposure to acute paediatric and neonatal training and a structured teaching programme. Fellows will be allocated a consultant supervisor.

The successful candidate will be welcomed to participate in paediatric teaching sessions. ST1-2 teaching sessions occur once a week and there are weekly departmental teaching sessions.

Undergraduate and Postgraduate Teaching.

The Trusts inpatient hospitals are Associate Teaching Hospitals with the University of Birmingham Medical School, and take part in undergraduate teaching of medical students in their third, fourth and final years. These programmes include consultant supervision through consultants acting as clinical and educational supervisors, weekly protected teaching time, and a training portfolio logbook of clinical competencies and procedures. The Trust is already working closely with the University of Worcesters Institute of Health and Society and seeking ways of extending this collaboration.


General Duties.

Inpatients consultant and registrar ward rounds on Riverbank Ward and the Neonatal Unit, ward referrals.

Attendance at deliveries.

Newborn Infant Physical Examinations (NIPEs) and reviewing babies on the Postnatal Ward.

First tier Paediatric and Neonatal on-call.

Observation and assisting the consultant or registrar with relevant procedures and investigations.

Attendance at multidisciplinary team meetings.

Attendance at scheduled teaching sessions.

Participation in audit projects.

Participation in Mortality & Morbidity case reviews.


The Consultants are keen to encourage audit and research projects. There is an active Clinical Audit Programme and audit meetings are held quarterly in the departmental teaching sessions.


Worcestershire Royal Hospitals Paediatric Department has regular lunchtime meetings on Mondays which includes Journal Clubs, junior case presentations and teaching for Junior Doctors.


This job description, together with the job plan, will be reviewed 6 monthly (if applicable) and agreed with the Clinical Director and Lead Consultant to ensure that it continually reflects the areas of work, clinical responsibility of the post and Trust requirements. It is expected that new appointments will carry out a diary exercise.

Person Specification

  • Qualification that is registerable with the GMC for full registration i.e. MB BS or equivalent, and eligible for GMC registration at time of appointment


  • Neonatal Life Support
  • Paediatric Immediate Life Support
  • MRCPCH Part 1

Other Requirements

  • An understanding of the current NHS environment, particularly in relation to reforms, initiatives and issues
  • Workplace Health Clearance by time of appointment
  • Access to transport and ability to travel across hospital sites


  • At least 2 years full time or equivalent postgraduate training.
  • Ability to offer clinical opinion on a range of problems both emergency and elective within specialty and sufficient experience.
  • Ability to take responsibility for clinical care of patients


  • Experience of Audit

Teaching experience

  • Ability to teach clinical skills to medical, nursing staff and other disciplines
  • Experience of teaching clinical skills to undergraduates and postgraduates
