We are inviting applications for a Consultant General Paediatrician to join our team at the Princess Royal University Hospital in Bromley. The role will be fixed term for 5 months (4PAs). This role has been developed to expand the general paediatric consultant establishment. We are recruiting initially as a 5 month fixed term appointment with a plan to subsequently recruit a substantive consultant into post.

Main duties of the job

The role will include general paediatric clinics, paediatric ward and paediatric ED weeks and general paediatric Consultant of the Week (COW) on-call. On-site evening duties until 21:30 and off site night on-call duties, A developed special interest in either paediatric respiratory medicine or paediatric gastroenterology is desirable to support future development of services for Kings Child Health. The future strategy is to build on Kings-Denmark Hill tertiary services to increase speciality expertise available at PRUH and develop increased cross site working. We will also consider applications from general paediatricians with alternative interests.

Job description
Job responsibilities

When Service Consultant,(Consultant of the Week) he/she will lead the clinical delivery of Paediatric services at the Princess Royal University Hospital site with the support of the entire clinical team. The post holder will be the Service Consultant/ CoW for 1 week out of 8 weeks. It is anticipated that the post holder will perform 4 -5 general paediatric clinics every 8 weeks.

The on call commitment is for a 1:8 (equivalent to 1:5) rota which is paid at a Category A supplement. The on-call commitment includes weekday on-site cover to 21:30 for general paediatrics including review of new admissions and support for ward discharges.

It is expected that he/she will participate in teaching and developing the junior paediatric team and medical students. The post holder will develop joint care pathways and guidelines as well as participate fully in clinical governance and quality improvement.

S/he will also be expected to act as a Clinical Supervisor for Medical Students who rotate through the department. This will involve attending various meetings to support these activities, working with the College Tutor for the Department and the Undergraduate Dean.

The post will be based at Princess Royal University Hospital.

As a senior employee of the Trust you will work in close co-operation with, and support other clinical, medical professional and managerial colleagues in providing high quality healthcare to the Trusts patients. Integral to these responsibilities is the following:-

  • The provision of a first class clinical service
  • Effective leadership to all staff engaged in the speciality
  • Sustaining and developing teaching and research in conjunction with Kings College London
  • Undertaking all work in accordance with the Trusts procedures and operating policies
  • Conducting clinical practice in accordance with contractual requirements and within the parameters of the Trusts service plans
  • Maintaining the confidence of business plans and development strategies formulated for the speciality, the Division or the Trust

Person Specification

  • MRCPCH or equivalent


  • Experience working independently at consultant level

Research Experience

  • Understand principles and applications of clinical research.
  • Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems.


  • Experience of managing children i in the acute and out patient setting
  • bility to offer expert clinical opinion on and manage a range of problems in the acute Paediatric setting, including safeguarding issues.
  • Ability to manage and lead an MDT
