Trust Doctor (ST1/2 equivalent) in General Medicine

Fixed Term 12 months

Candidates are invited to apply for a variety of fixed term Trust Doctors (ST1-2 equivalent). These posts are fixed term for 1 year but candidates who are only able to commit to a shorter time will be considered equally.

The Department of General Medicine at Whipps Cross Hospital aims to offer a comprehensive range of services to the local population of Waltham Forest, Western Redbridge, and the neighbouring part of Southwest Essex. The department regularly sees a rich mixture of pathology and complex psycho-social issues. The local population contains a significant level of Older patients with frailty and high rates of dementia and associated delirium.

Many of these posts will be un-banded (no out of hours commitment) and may be ideal for those studying for exams. Successful candidates will be invited to enrol with Staff Bank if desired to enable them to take advantage of locum opportunities in the evenings and weekends. There are some posts available with out-of-hours commitments which will be subject to any new Junior Doctors contract.

Main duties of the job

These posts are intended to sit within the General Medicine department but may include General Medicine, Acute Medicine & Ambulatory Care, Respiratory Medicine, Gastroenterology and Metabolic Medicine, with precise rotations agreed between the post-holder and the Trust.

Successful applicants will be able to develop individualized educational goals including a focus within the specialty of your choice. This post presents excellent opportunities to develop clinical skills. This provides a good educational opportunity and if the post holder is interested, they will be able to gain audit, research or teaching experience. Job responsibilities

The main duties of the post are:

  • To care for patients in the ward and arrange the on-going patient care
  • To attend daily consultant-led ward or board rounds
  • To be responsible for keeping of medical case-notes, ordering and interpreting investigations, writing electronic summaries and making referrals to other specialties.
  • To ensure that discharge summaries are written out promptly and accurately.
  • To interact with members of the multidisciplinary team in the interests of patients
  • To flexibly support service needs as required
  • Supervising and performing medical procedures.
  • Participate in clinical meetings, and governance meetings including M& M and academic sessions.

Person Specification

  • Full GMC Registration with license to practice


  • Progression towards MRCP or Equivalent Specialist qualification
  • Evidence of participation in research (peer reviewed publications etc.)


  • Broad experience in G(I)M
  • Current ALS certificate


  • Detailed knowledge of G(I)M and of the specialist skills required for this post
  • Knowledge of multidisciplinary clinical audit and demonstrable commitment to improving quality of care to patients
  • Understanding of modern medical curricula and commitment to life-long learning


  • Ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team
  • Ability to teach medical students and junior medical and nursing staff.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, patients, relatives, GPs nurses and other agencies
  • IT skills


  • Flexible and co-operative approach to colleagues
  • Good leadership skills
  • Self-motivated with an enquiring, critical approach to work
  • Enthusiasm and ability to work under pressure
