We are looking for an enthusiastic junior doctor to join our dynamic team providing inpatient general internal medicine and gastroenterology/hepatology, to the residents of Newham, east London. This full-time post will be available from 2 September 2024 - 31 August 2025. This innovative post is designed for doctors who are at ST3+/senior SHO/registrar level as a developmental opportunity prior to taking up a higher specialty physician training post. It is designed for doctors who will have completed internal medicine training (IMT) (or its equivalent). The post holder would be given the same training and on-call opportunities as the other Specialist Registrars (SpRs) on the North-East Thames (NET) gastroenterology rotation program, who are working in this hospital

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will contribute to the acute General Medical service at Newham University Hospital (NUH). This involves full commitment to the general medical on call rota on a 1:6 frequency with prospective cover (ST3+ level). They will participate in the acute management of gastroenterology and hepatology inpatients. They will also look after general medical (GIM) inpatients aged < 75 who are attached to the gastroenterology team on a ward-based system. They will be supported by the gastroenterology consultant and the other junior doctor members of the gastroenterology team. There is a 24-hour, 7-day emergency consultant delivered endoscopy service. They will be joining a team that comprises of 5 consultants, 3 SpRs/ST3+, 2 ST1/2s, 1 FY2 and 3 FY1s.

5. Main duties & responsibilities

Clerking patients on the acute medical during the daytime, weekends and at night as part of the on-call team Leading or participating in daily ward rounds Identify and appropriately manage clinical problems Prescribe safely Keep an accurate and relevant medical record Manage time and clinical priorities effectively Communicate effectively with patients, relatives and colleagues Use evidence, guidelines and audit to benefit patient care Act in a professional manner at all times Manage ethical and legal issues which occur during the management of patients with general medical problems Educate patients effectively Become life-long learners and teachers Be part of the cardiac arrest team when on-call The post holder will participate in one consultant supervised general gastroenterology outpatient clinic per week. There is also a consultant/nurse endoscopist supervised endoscopy list every week that the post holder would be expected to attend (if they wish).

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential

  • MBBS or equivalent
  • Full GMC Registration
  • A minimum of 3 years post qualification experience
  • MRCP (UK) or equivalent
  • ALS certification

Desirable

  • Intercalated BSc or equivalent
  • Higher degrees including MSc, PhD or MD (where research thesis not part of first medical degree)

Knowledge
Essential

  • Medical knowledge commensurate with grade.
  • Demonstrable experience in teaching and other aspects of education
  • Previous experience at registrar or senior SHO/IMT1-2 level in the UK.
  • Experience working as a doctor in the NHS.

Desirable

  • At least 4 months experience in gastroenterology or hepatology at ST level or equivalent
  • Experience with upper /lower GI endoscopy
