Main duties of the job

Specific clinical areas include:-

To act as Team Leader in the resuscitation of seriously traumatised patients and those with critical illness.

Assist in the smooth integration of the Emergency Department and Urgent Care services.

To share with colleagues responsibility for the day-to-day management of the Emergency Department

To have responsibility for and actively participate in continuing professional development (CPD) utilising a minimum of 1 PAs a week for self-direct study.

The new appointees will be expected to join the middle grade body in leading by example, managing the sickest patients, engaging with the juniors to ensure safe and timely management and working with the nursing staff to ensure adequate patient flow. They will be the most senior doctor in the ED at certain times of the day- currently midnight to 0800. Therefore significant experience in Emergency Medicine is essential.

For management purposes and use of resources the post holders will be accountable to the clinical lead and will ensure the effective and efficient use of resources allocated.

We provide hospital services from two acute sites - Darlington Memorial Hospital and University Hospital of North Durham. We have a centre for planned care in Bishop Auckland and provide care from community hospitals in Chester-le-Street, Shotley Bridge, Barnard Castle, Sedgefield and Weardale as well as over 80 other community based settings and providing care in patients' homes.

Person Specification

Experience

Essential

  • Extensive post-graduate experience in Emergency Medicine or attained CT3 ACCS competencies with further experience as middle grade in EM. Experience working in a UK Emergency Department.
  • Already working towards CESR.
  • Level I ultrasound sign off.

Desirable

  • Experience working in a UK Emergency Department.
  • Already working towards CESR.
  • Level I ultrasound sign off.

Qualifications

Essential

  • MBBS or equivalent
  • Must have x2 of: ATLS/ETC, ALS, APLS/ EPALs

Desirable

  • MRCEM
  • Instructor on life support courses
  • Additional courses relevant to EM eg level 1 US, HMIMMS, NLS

Statutory Registration

Essential

  • Full Registration with the GMC
  • Leave to work in UK Evidence of compliance with standards of Good Medical Practice

Special Skills & Knowledge

Essential

  • Competences or equivalent with Skills equivalent to EM Higher specialist trainee
  • Completed audit or Quality Improvement Projects relevant to Emergency Medicine

Desirable

  • Evidence of research and publication in peer reviewed journals

Special Requirements

Essential

  • Able to work flexibly with colleagues to provide services
  • Able to work effectively within a multi-disciplinary team, motivating and influencing others.
  • Able to communicate effectively with colleagues, patients, relatives, GPs, nurses, management and other agencies.
