Job Details

Medical Examiner posts have been created by the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) in response to observations made in the Third Report of the Shipman Inquiry. The introduction of the medical examiner system will promote robust, transparent and independent scrutiny of death certification processes.

There is already a well-established Medical Examiner Service based at the Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust which is comprised of part-time Medical Examiners and Medical Examiner Officers (providing administrative and managerial support).

We have already started to roll out and implement scrutiny within the Community setting. The Trust is looking to recruit another Consultant or GP to help support the office and is keen for doctors with community and/or GP experience to join our service or consultants from the acute setting in the role promoting transparency and independent scrutiny of all non-coronial deaths.

Main duties of the job

The ME role can be very rewarding and allow successful colleagues to develop a new area of clinical practice.

Medical examiners (MEs) are experienced doctors who will verify clinical information on Medical Certificates of Cause of Death (MCCDs) and ensure that appropriate referrals are made to the coroner for further investigation. A practising medical practitioner who has been on the General Medical Council register for a minimum of five years post registration can apply to be a Medical Examiner. It is recommended that Medical Examiners are either consultant grade hospital doctors from a range of disciplines or experienced GPs. MEs will take a consistent approach to the formulation of MCCD content. It is expected that ME sessions will be undertaken on one of the MFT sites and work supported by the Lead ME and Medical Examiner Officers.

MEs must have up-to-date knowledge of medical conditions and treatments and be able to exercise judgement about when to seek specialist advice.

The Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust is a multi-site acute and community Trust, based in Guildford, which serves a population of more than 336,000 across south west Surrey. We are also a specialist tertiary cancer centre, offering state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment services to a population of up to two million and a tertiary specialist centre for ENT and Maxillofacial surgery. We attract referrals from across the whole country for other specialties (i.e. urology).

We attract referrals from across the country for some specialties including urology. Our Minimal Access Therapy Training Unit (key-hole surgery) is one of only three such training units in the UK. Our patients also benefit from state of the art diagnostic equipment including two MRI scanners, four CT scanners, interventional radiology equipment and a gamma camera. We have one of the lowest mortality rates in the country.

We employ around 4,200 members of staff making us one of Guildford’s largest employers. In addition, the hospital is supported by a thriving group of 500 volunteers all of whom provide valuable services on an independent, voluntary basis.

We have a great reputation and history of embracing quality improvement (QI) and transformation work – continuously improving is one of our core values.

The Trust has strong links with the nearby University of Surrey and staff are well supported if they wish to undertake further study. As well as this, staff are able to develop and enhance skills and knowledge by undertaking post-qualification support and training at the hospital’s dedicated Education Centre

Situated on a green field site on the outskirts of Guildford, the Trust has excellent rail and road links (via the A3 and M25) to London (35 minutes) and to the south coast (35 minutes).
