This post is based at St Helens & Whiston sites.

Our Trust is on an exciting journey to enhance ENT services for local patients. The ENT services are expanding and currently looking for enthusiastic, forward-thinking Consultant in ENT to join our friendly and dynamic team substantively.

About the Role

We have 1 vacancy for ENT Consultant, which will be based at:

St Helens Hospital and Whiston Site

  • 1 x ENT Head and Neck Consultant

Following induction, the post holder will be expected to participate in on-call provision, with a commitment of 1:4 on call rota for weekdays and evenings, and a 1:4 on-call rota for weekends covering at the St Helens & Whiston site.

As part of our commitment to delivering high quality, safe, sustainable ENT services for the communities we serve, our longer-term vision may also involve cross site working, with specific arrangements determined by future job plan reviews.

All applicants must hold full GMC registration and be on Specialist Register or within six months of obtaining their Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) at time of interview. CESR candidates must have written GMC confirmation of successful application. Applicants must also meet all eligibility criteria for the post.

Job description
Job responsibilities

As part of our professional and compassionate team you will do everything you can to ensure the patients treatment is of the highest standard. You will be performing ENT surgical procedures on patients referred to the Hospital, working in accordance with hospital protocols and working practices.

You will participate in the outpatient clinics prior to surgery, and in all aspects of the operative care of the patients. It is anticipated that you will deliver 2 theatre sessions and 4 clinics per week with potential to expand services across both Trusts.

Person Specification

  • Applicants must be eligible for full registration with the GMC at the time of application
  • Applicants must have entry on the GMC Specialist Register via one of the following: 1) Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) (The proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of the interview) 2) Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR) (CESR candidates must have written GMC confirmation upon successful application)
  • MB ChB or equivalent medical qualification
  • FRCS (Head & Neck) or equivalent medical qualification
  • Valid ATLS Provider Status or equivalent medical qualification
  • Success in intercollegiate specialty examination or overseas equivalent


  • Postgraduate thesis or equivalent medical qualification

Clinical Experience

  • Evidence of achievement of competencies by time of appointment in line with GMC standards/Good Medical Practice including: Good clinical care, maintaining good medical practice, good relationships and communication with patients, good working relationships with colleagues, good teaching and training, professional behaviour and probity and delivery of good acute clinical care.
  • Appropriate knowledge base and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems
  • Demonstrates the necessary range, depth and breadth of competencies in ENT to provide both adult and paediatric work.
  • Fellowship of similar advanced clinical experience in the appropriate area

Teaching Experience

  • Evidence of appropriate teaching experience


  • Evidence of relevant academic achievements e.g. degrees, awards

Research Experience

  • Demonstrates ability to undertake robust audit / research within team structure within the last 3 years


  • Evidence of relevant research e.g. presentation, publications in peer reviewed journals within the last 3 years
