This is an excellent opportunity to join the Cardiology department at East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust and Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. The successful candidate will join a service that prides itself in effective leadership, innovative thinking, and excellent teamwork. We strive to challenge our existing working practices and to constantly improve our service to deliver best practice guidance and to ensure that our patient outcomes are successful, and they feel valued during their visits to the Trust.This is a substantive appointment, based at the Lister Hospital in Stevenage but with clinical outpatient activity at other sites and cath lab sessions at the Hammersmith Hospital. The Lister Hospital enjoys a unique geographical location close to London and Cambridge and the Trust has a reputation for our commitment to the highest standards of care, but also for our friendly and supportive approach.The Trust has a comprehensive programme of leadership mentoring available for newly qualified Consultants. Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will be expected to be actively involved in the coronary intervention service at East and North Herts NHS Trust including participating in the primary PCI rota. The postholder will have structural (TAVI) cath lab sessions at the Hammersmith Hospital. They will also contribute towards the general cardiology service at the Lister, including participation in the Cardiologist of the week rota which includes weekend cardiology ward rounds.We are looking for you to contribute towards the delivery and development of the cardiology and coronary intervention service at East & North Herts NHS Trust including outpatient clinics, cath lab sessions and participating in the 24/7 PPCI rota. There is also a contribution to general cardiology as part of the cardiologist of the week rota.A strong commitment to the training and education of trainees and other staff members is also expected.Contribute towards the structural intervention (TAVI) service at the Hammersmith Hospital.

Job responsibilities

  • Maintenance of high-quality patient centered care
  • Shared responsibility for the day-to-day management of the service and participation in strategic planning
  • Teaching and training within the multidisciplinary service
  • Active involvement in multidisciplinary team meetings and directorate clinical governance activity
  • Active participation in continuing medical education

Person Specification

  • Entry on GMC Specialist Register or, be within 6 months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) at time of interview or, provide GMC confirmed eligibility for entry on the Specialist Register
  • MRCP or qualification of an equivalent level
  • Advanced Life Support


  • Postgraduate degree (or equivalent)

Previous Experience

  • Broad range of experience in cardiology
  • Competency in Coronary Intervention
  • Competency in TAVI
  • Experience of supervising undergraduates, doctors in training and other colleagues
  • Ability to offer and be accountable for full and independent expert diagnostic opinion
  • Can evidence leading on patient safety issues and achieving a change in practice


  • Demonstrable experience in a Locum Consultant role
  • Published papers and original work in peer reviewed journals
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the basic principles of audit, evidence based practice and clinical quality improvement initiatives
  • Demonstrable experience and participation in research


  • Able to evidence engagement with clinical governance and the identification of errors and the learning from errors.
  • Evidence engagement with appraisal and revalidation
  • Able to show situational awareness and application of good decision making
  • Ability to effectively teach clinical skills
  • Ability to critically appraise published evidence


  • Demonstrate understanding of basic principles of audit, evidence-based practice, and clinical quality improvement initiatives
  • Comprehensive knowledge and insight regarding all the domains within the GMC standards of Good Medical Practice
