Applications are invited for the post of Senior Clinical Fellow in Colorectal Surgery, based at Wythenshawe Hospital, Manchester University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. This post is for a Senior Trainee who has completed their General Surgery training to CCT level or equivalent (or are within 12 months of completion of CCT). More junior trainees will not be shortlisted. Applications from suitably qualified international trainees are also welcomed, provided their seniority matches CCT level.

Main duties of the job

Fellows can expect a broad case mix including super-specialist and general colorectal surgery with a particular emphasis on IBD surgery including re-do IBD surgery, pouch surgery and minimally invasive approaches. The fellow will participate in the on-call rota at Specialty Registrar level (full shift, 1:10).

Person Specification

  • FRCS or equivalent
  • Certificate of completion of training in general/colorectal surgery (CCT) or within 12 months prior to CCT


  • Higher degree - PhD, MD, MBA
  • Membership of relevant professional societies (eg ACPGBI, ASGBI, ESCP, ECCO)

Clinical knowledge and expertise

  • Demonstrates appropriate technical and clinical competence and evidence of diagnostic skills and clinical judgment
  • Competent to undertake General Surgical on calls at registrar level
  • Competent in general laparoscopic surgery
  • Experience of supervising and teaching FY and core surgical trainees
  • Evidence of involvement in clinical research


  • Teaching qualifications
  • Up to date GCP training
  • Publications in peer reviewed journals

Personal skills

  • Ability to work within and lead a team
  • Ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with patients, relatives, GPs, nurses and other individuals
  • Awareness of own limitations and when to ask for help
  • Capacity to manage time and prioritise workload
  • Demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues.
