An opportunity has arisen for a Locum Consultant in Infection (Microbiology or Microbiology/Infectious Diseases).

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Microbiology Department in the largest Trust in the country.

The Department is involved in a Trust wide project to create a cohesive infection service across all the hospitals within the Trust, in what is one of the largest infection departments in the UK. This will incorporate colleagues in microbiology, virology, infectious diseases, sexual and reproductive health, respiratory medicine, genitourinary medicine and infection prevention.

Main duties of the job

We are recruiting for a locum Consultant Microbiologist (18-month post) to join our team and be a driving force in further developing our infection service. This post would be well suited to patient facing clinicians looking to develop specialist interests in any of the many areas available. From an infection perspective the opportunities to develop on existing links are considerable.

The post would suit candidates with either Medical Microbiology or dual Medical Microbiology & Infectious Diseases accreditation (or expected to be CCT accredited within 6 months), to work within the Department of Microbiology at MFT.

The post includes cross site working as the job plan requires. The clinical laboratory is located on the Oxford Road Campus

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential

  • Full and specialist registration (and a licence to practice) with the General Medical Council (or eligible for registration within 6 months of interview)
  • MB ChB or equivalent
  • FRCPath or equivalent

Desirable

  • Postgraduate thesis
  • MRCP or equivalent
  • Diploma in Infection, Prevention - MB ChB or equivalent & Control

Clinical experience
Essential

  • holder of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Medical Microbiology or Medical Microbiology/Infectious Diseases, or within six months of award of CCT or equivalent by date of interview
  • ability to offer expert opinion and deal with a range of problems
  • ability to develop an area of specialist clinical interest

Desirable

  • experience in a range of infection control problems, including outbreak management
  • experience in management of in- patients or infection clinics including OPAT

Management and administrative experience
Essential

  • ability to advise on efficient and smooth running of specialist service
  • ability to organise and manage priorities
  • understanding of clinical governance network
  • evidence of audit

Desirable

  • formal management training

Teaching Experience
Essential

  • experience of supervising foundation year trainees or equivalent
  • ability to teach clinical and laboratory skills

Desirable

  • experience of teaching clinical skills to undergraduates
  • experience of teaching medical trainees
  • formal teaching qualification

Research Experience
Essential

  • ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems

Desirable

  • presentations and or abstracts
  • publications in peer reviewed journals
