We have a great opportunity for an aspiring Divisional Medical Director who wants to improve mental health services.

We are looking to appoint to the role of Divisional Medical Director providing medical leadership for Professional Standards.

Building on your existing clinical leadership skills, you will play a key role in providing medical leadership and developing our clinical effectiveness agenda. Your aim is to ensure we deliver the excellent, effective and innovative services our patients deserve, and our staff are committed to delivering.

This is an opportunity for you, as a medical leader, to become part of a new divisional senior leadership team focusing on the development and delivery of holistic care supporting your local population needs.

The most important part of your role is your commitment to always put the patients first.

Your division will be led by a Clinical Director and you will work alongside a Divisional Director of Operations who will be responsible for all delivery and performance and a Divisional Director of Nursing and Quality who will be responsible for all quality and safety aspects.

The successful applicant will work within the Operations Directorate with professional leadership from the Medical Directorate.

The role will be complimented with a Consultant Psychiatrist role in either, Older Adult, General Adult, Learning Disabilities, Forensic or CAMHs Psychiatry.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work 3 PA covering the Divisional Medical Director role. The clinical sessions can be in Older Adult, General Adult, Learning Disabilities, Forensic or CAMHs Psychiatry.

The post holder will be expected to maintain Section 12 (2) and be an Approved Clinician.

Person Specification
Education and Qualification

  • At least three years' experience as a Consultant Psychiatrist
  • Included on the GMC Specialist Register
  • Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practise at the time of appointment
  • Approved Clinician Status or able to achieve within 3 months of appointment


  • Medical Leadership Role
  • Leadership/Management qualification or equivalent experience

Clinical Knowledge and Experience

  • Has experience in medical workforce supervision.
  • Experience in acting in a leadership role

Management Knowledge and Experience

  • Experience in a leadership role, use of influencing and negotiation skills.
  • Knowledge of National Policy relating to the NHS and Health & Social Care.
  • Understanding of the complexities of working with partner agencies.
  • Understanding of and commitment to Quality Improvement methodologies.
  • Knowledge of current health service policy and contracting arrangements.

Knowledge of Clinical Governance

  • Knowledge of National and Local Clinical Guidelines and Procedures.

Personal Skills

  • Commitment to working with Managers and Clinicians to achieve shared goals.
  • Awareness of cultural and ethnic issues for service users and staff.
  • Ability to develop good working relationships with managers and professionals from other agencies.
