Remuneration value up to $514,452 p.a. comprising salary between $9,360.20 p.f. - $9,924.00 p.f. (L25-L27) or remuneration value up to $470,780 p.a. comprising salary between $7,827.20 p.f. - $9,091.70 p.f. (L18-L24); employer superannuation contribution (up to 12.75%), annual leave loading (17.5%), attraction and retention incentive allowance, professional development allowance, professional development leave 3.6 weeks p.a., professional indemnity cover, plus overtime and on-call allowances.

Your opportunity

  • Special interest in Colorectal / Upper GI or Abdominal wall desirable but not essential. 
  • Provide and maintain efficient, effective and equitable surgical services within the Mackay Hospital and Health Service (MHHS), co-operating as necessary with other departments and outside agencies to ensure that Department of Surgery integrates effectively within the hospital, community health service, and the wider community. 
  • Advise on surgical services as required, ensuring co-ordinated provision of care delivery by all staff within the department. 

Your role 

  • All staff of Mackay Hospital and Health Service are responsible for making the health system safer and more effective by: 
  • Having an understanding of their broad responsibilities as a team member and an individual for maintaining safety and quality in health care. 
  • Ensuring that safety and quality procedures are followed. 
  • Provide supervision and education to members of the workforce. 
  • Participate in the review of procedures individually or as part of a team. 
  • Participate in the development and implementation of organisational processes that improve health care services, development and implementation of safety systems, engagement in improvement initiatives and related training. 
  • Take reasonable care of your own health and safety and ensure that your acts/omissions do not adversely affect the health and safety of others. 
  • Complete all necessary Workplace Health and Safety (WH&S) training and comply with WH&S policy and procedures. 
  • Report WH&S information, training and supervision. 
  • Ensure the health and safety of MHHS workers while at work. 
  • Provide WH&S information, training and supervision. 
  • Support incident investigation, undertake risk assessments and ensure risk control measures are implemented. 
  • Provide a high standard of surgical care to patients of MHHS.  This includes provision of acute in-patient and outpatient care, participation in the 24 hour on-call roster and other duties as determined by the Director of Surgery. 
  • Provision of above services through the economic use of equipment, consumables, drugs and facilities.  Ensure that equipment used in the clinical care of patients is in good working order and advise of any deficiencies. 
  • Participate in departmental clinical and service improvement activities. 
  • Participate in the promotion of standards of excellence in the provision of clinical and public health services, maintain standards within the department in keeping with those contained in the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards Accreditation Guide. 
  • Provide consultancy and advisory services as required to both internal and external agencies that are relevant to the health industry. 
  • Maintain sound communication and collaborative working relationships with other departments and disciplines within the Health Service to ensure smooth and effective operation of the department. 
  • Actively participate and maintain membership in relevant organisational committees. 
  • Document relevant clinical information legibly, concisely and accurately in medical records. 
  • Improve the quality of patient care by participation in peer review, clinical audit and quality assurance programs. 
  • Provide ethical decision making in the achievement of organisation goals. 
  • Comply with and utilise contemporary human resource management requirements and practices, including workplace health and safety, equal employment opportunity, anti-discrimination policies and ethical behaviour as specified in the Queensland Health Code of Conduct. 
  • Facilitate and encourage innovation and change by adopting contemporary approaches to clinical service delivery creating a high-level performance culture within the service and contributing to the strategic planning of Health Service. 
  • Undertake teaching and educational initiatives and responsibilities within the Department of Surgery. 
  • Appropriate development of general surgical expertise of surgical trainees to RACS standards, resident medical staff and medical students and to be involved in the overall education, evaluation and feedback of performance of these three categories. 
  • The appointee will be required to provide services to any of the health facilities within the MHHS. 
  • Supervise clinical care of patients by junior staff. 
  • Manage the performance appraisal of subordinate staff.
